You will have to ask the person your in trouble with - to explain why what you did is wrong.
It may be related to the #3 commandment: "Thou shalt not swear falsely by the name of the LORD..." But I am not sure who you are in trouble with.
When a person swears to GOD - that they are telling the truth - it means they are held accountable to GOD for lying, and as this is very serious it is rarely done. (Lying to GODs face - is a sure trip to hell.) But if your telling the truth - your OK.
You must know humans use the bible in court for this reason, it shows respect to GOD NOT to lie. As it's a sin, a serious sin. It's so serious that it's a commandment to NOT lie (#9 "Thou shalt not bear false witness against your neighbor")
I do not know what faith or religion you are but I enclosed a source. No offence.

The problem with the whole "swear to God" phrase is that people use it mindlessly and carelessly far too often to refer to the stupidest, most unimportant things. Do you really think it's worth "swearing to God" that your cat caught a mouse, or something equally dumb? When people say such things, they're showing that they don't have much respect for God if they would "swear to him" over the most trivial things.

it is if you dont keep it. that is if you even believe in god. where as i dont necessarily, then i dont see it as very wrong as its like swearing to santa. and as for the guys answer above me, swearing to god and cursing are completely different. your not taking the lords name in vain, swearing is like making an oath. you set out to attempt what you claim. if you break it then you break your oath to god. (swearing is in a different term this one)

"Vain" means that you're taking it lightly or lying. If you swear with conviction and it is true, it is not wrong.

It's not 'wrong' at all, it just pisses some people off who take themselves wayyyy too seriously.
