Respect him and his religion , Vedanta can be very profound, but just be yourself, and you may certainly give a gift if you want, but you don't have to.

yes, you can go by his /her tastes n you n gift any depending on your budget.

Its a festival celebrated on Goddess Durga or kali victory against demon Mahishasura and also on the same day lord Rama's victory against demon Ravana
