Start looking up the Spanish Inquisitions, and Martin Luther's writings that he posted on the doors. Protestant means that we protested the attrocities of the Catholic church, with their exalting Mary, the Spanish inquisitions, where they tortured those that would not follow their teachings, and other things. Martin Luther posted letters denouncing their tactics and practices, and the Protestants were born. The first Protestant church was the Lutherans, named after Martin Luther. The problem is that some Protestant religions held on to some of the practices of the Catholic church, while others did not. The protestants are divided into many denominations: Baptists, Mormans, Pentacostal, Jehovah's Witnesses, Episcapalians, Lutherans, etc...All Protestants came out of the Catholic church, and that's why we are all Christians with different beliefs.

Protestantism engulfs most branches of Christianity. Also known as the reformation of Christianity, it began when Martin Luther nailed a letter on the door to the local Catholic church naming his complaints against the doctrines of the church. This was in the late 1500's or early 1600's. Luther was the first one to translate the Bible into the common language of the people in 1611. Up until then one had to learn Latin to study the Bible, so the wisdom of the scriptures were kept solely in the hands of the priests. You can Google Martin Luther and Protestants to find excellent web links to study this topic.

Read about Martin Luther and read his "95 Thesis". That was the seed that the Protestant Reformation sprang from.

When he nailed this document to the church door the whole world changed.
