It depends. If you are pregnant, it can be due to normal swelling, or possibly pre-eclampsia or hogh blood pressure.

If not pregnant, some possibilities can be gravity ( sitting too long, standing too long) obesity, too much salt, high blood pressure, and possibly heart problems.

Its best to stop by the doctor, and get a quick check up, for swelling in ankles. They can determine pretty quickly what the cause may be.

circulation is slowed and or retaining fluid dependent edema get off your feet the fluid is sitting and isnt getting pumped throu heart and kidneys for many different reasons

there are lots of reasons for pitting edema, heart failure, low protein states (eg malnutrition, liver failure) are common possible reasons

Most commonly it is protien deficiency, but it could also be due to renal disease, check with ur doc
