I don't know why everyone thinks you have to bleach dark hair to go lighter. I think this is BS started by salons so they can charge exhorbitant amounts. I have been coloring my hair for years, mostly by myself, but I also was a receptionist at a salon owned by friends. I have brown/dk auburn natural color (now with some grey). Over the years I have become various shades of auburn and red tones, strawberry blond, even a blonde once. I have NEVER had to have my hair bleached to get a color I wanted..When I was having color applied at our salon (and they would spontaneously color, henna, etc.) they never bleached my hair. Maybe you should try to use a color a couple of shades lighter than you think you want. I have done this and I come out the color I want. Bleaching is really hard on your hair. Don't get sucked into something you most probably will regret. Try a lighter shade first. Good luck!

Dark hair must go through many stages to lighten... professional help is the best solution. Be specific with your licensed professional stylist/colorist and you will get the results you desire without taking the chance at damaging or even loosing your hair. Dark hair is a challenge and is best left to a pro if you want lighter results... otherwise you could end up with orange hair trying to do it yourself! Aside from that, over-the-counter box haircolors are only designed to lighten about 1 to 1 1/2 shades... barely enough to notice. If you want lighter, see a pro!

color will not lift color, so if you want to lighten your hair you need bleach(lightener) or if your hair has never been dyed then you can lighten it by 2-3 levels lighter by using permanent color and 30 volume peroxide. Go to a salon and ask for " a heavy full weave that is toned 2 shades lighter than your natural hair color" this will bring you a effect like these pictures. hope it helps hunny!!!!

Don't dye your own hair. I only go to the salon. Lightening dark hair is like a 3 stage process. My sister wants to get it bc she has extremely dark hair. Just get highlights. It's a 1 time thing.

i dont think you went to a salon. because if people can go from platnium blonde to black or black to plat im sure you can lighten you hair. i have! go to a salon, actually and get it done. its not expensive. i go to a salon to keep up on my hair every 4-6 weeks. it's currently lightbrown with black and platnium. at first it will cost a bit.. but after that the touch ups are cheap. hope that help ya.

the answer is bleach. Bleach strands or chunks...your hair would get lighter for sure. Depends on how long you leave the bleach in your hair. You can dye your hair another color, like light brown or red. Good luck...oh and one more thing, bleach damages your hair, so don't do it often.

You're probably gonna need to head to the salon. I know my ladylove had the same problem and they had to prep her hair in someway before applying the color. Good luck.

the dark br. hair has to be removed (bleached out) and then you can change to a lighter color. any hairdresser knows that so you didn't go to a very good salon.

You might have to have your hair slightly pre-bleached for a different color to show.
