My parents never made me go to church. We only went once in a blue moon. I started going to church because of a boy I liked when I was a teenager. I just wanted to go for a chance to see him. He's long gone, but I found something there that I liked. And I wanted to learn more. When my kids were little they of course went to church with me. What was I supposed to do, shove them in the closet while I went alone? My son continued to attend church even in his teen years without any prompting when I started working on weekends and couldn't go anymore. My daughter never liked church as much as him and stopped going when she reached about 16. She still believes in God but she doesn't feel the need for church. That's her choice. Both my kids turned out great.

Does your teacher also bring up the point that kids usually do what their parents do, they imitate everything their parents do, not just go to church. It's funny that as an atheist, she makes sure to bring up that as an example. There are good habits and bad habits. Breathing is a good habit, and so is going to church! If you are still going to church now as an adult or older teen, then you are probably going because you have learned to love Jesus because of your parents instruction and want to learn more of Him. If you have a choice whether or not to go to church and you still go, whether out of habit or whatever, the fact is you go, when you don't have to anymore!

Each person has their own reason for going. I cannot see myself going to church just out of habit. I go because I am a christian, and want to her God's word. I guess if you teacher was right then I would be going to Wal-Mart every Tuesday as I did when I was younger as well, but I am not so I guess the habit thing is debunked.

Some people do go to church out of habit. That's a sad thing. It's just learned behavior picked up during upbringing. Not all people do this, of course. Your teacher was wrong to generalize, if that's what he/she did. Blessed be.

In many parts of the USA, Africa and for all I know other parts of the world, church is entertainment as much as religion. But there's more: in the USA -- in the rural South especially -- it divides cultures. The old gospel song "You go to your church and I'll go to mine, but let's walk along together" says much.
While it's true that 50 million Americans belong to evangelical churches and claim to be Rapture Ready, I'm sure there are lots of atheists and agnostics among them.

My parents forced me to go to church all my life, and not until about two years ago did I realize that I don't feel anything. It is all habit for me. I wish I could feel something, I believe in God; the evidence is undeniable in my eyes, but I don't know if I'm a "Christian" because I've been forced to go all my life and it's all out of habit. I don't really go anymore, now that I'm out of the house, because I don't feel compelled to.

Of course its true. Lie after lie after lie over generations. That, on top of forced conversion. And of course, don't forget back in the "dawn of civilization", you either followed a particular religion, or you were killed. Crusades, holocaust, etc. Break the chain, and be a SELF THINKER. Don't let others determine your beliefs, or threaten you into something you're not. "Believe THIS or you'll go the HELL!". Whatever. Answer that question for yourself... are you going to church on your own accord. I bet not. I bet your parents have always taken you there. Search for the truth.

Someone had to go to church first. Right? That wasn't habit.

Yeah, education is a real bad thing. My parents went to school and then damn it they made me go!
Believe me ...you can go for years and not know Jesus ,then all of the sudden Bam!(Emeril) the light goes on,and your whole life changes. there's lots of people who are into it right away and some go all there life and still are not Christians, except in name only.

People go because they are told to go, either by guilt, peer pressure or habit. No child would think to go unless someone told them to go. It is a learned event.
