the reason for some dogs living longer than others is body to blood ratio. If you have a small dog who has a body that is meant to be small, everything is in comparison them. Large dogs with hearts that are to small cannot withstand their large bodies. It's like giantisum in humans, if your body is to large and your heart is normal size, your heart works to hard to transport your blood through the system, it eventually gives out. It's all about size comparison, which is why mutts are sometimes the best bet in breeds. you can mix the bad with the good.

At this time it is nutrition plays a huge part in the life span of our pets. REserach dog food online and you bwill be shocked. MOst fo the commerical pet foods belong to big food companies. They ues the sutff not fit fo rhumans for pet food. which at first sounds smart but you have to find out why the stuff is not fit for humans.
What so you think meat by products is? How does a cow carcess taht has been stipped of the actual meat and is virtually nothing but cartilage, tendons and bone. Now ad to that the fact that the meat is spoiled, rotting. They also use the organ meats not used in human foods. Like the intestines with the feces still in them! Eer wonder why your dog has no problem licking its butt or eatting Pooh? Well now you know.
And if you will read the ingredients of th edog food you will see tha tis is mosly grain. Dog really do need meat! And the grain they usein th edog foor is moldy grain not fit fo rhumans trouble is that same mold makes dogs ill too . WE had whole bunch of dogs die here in ohio a year of two ago because the grain used in the food was too moldy, soo moldy the dogs died!
Teh hot spots dog s get almost always poor nutrition. The smell dogs get poor nutrition. Shor tlives poor nutirion
There are good dog foods out there WEllness, Evangers, Hund-in-flockern, Solid Gold . just to name a few but youy can buy a bag of Purina 50 pounds for 20 bucks. Solid gold is $39 for 30 pounds. Not quite double the price but Most dogs do not eat more than $30 pounds of food in a month. so taht means people do not want to spend $20 or $20 dollars a month extra on their pets. to extend their lives, to give them better health , reduce arthritis an djoint torubles, clear up skin troubles ETC.-
Part of the reason small dogs live longer is that theya re more likely to get more human food more tables scraps to be fed better than larer dogs.

A side from the same reasons that some people live longer than others like, diet, exercise, and genetics there are some reasons. Medium to large dogs seem to live longer than tiny dogs or huge dogs. Some breeds has been either in-bread so badly, or bread to bring out some characteristics, like size or color, that they have introduced problems into the breeds. Breeds at both ends of the extreme, extremely large or extremely small, seem to suffer a wide range of health issues, from eyes to joint problems. I have had dogs since before I can remember and in the last 15 years they have started to live longer. My medium size dogs that were living around 12 years are pushing in to 16 years easily. It must be better diet and vet care.

A Previous answerer proceeded to answer this question with information about dog foods, and said that dog foods is what makes a dog live longer. This is untrue, and some of the information is false and/or misquoted information. Dog food can impact a dog's longevity, but in general, it is not teh determining factor. It's more likely that lack of food or malnutrition would have a larger impact on a dog's expected life than whether you fed a "high quality", "medium quality" or "low quality" grade brand of dog food. Just as many dogs are having problems with the higher quality foods as do with the low quality foods, and blaming the food is misguiding. Things like size, genetics, bloodlines, breed, nutrition, environment, etc. are the real deciding factors in a dog's longevity. If a dog is malnourished, on the streets/homeless, and a 100 pound rotwieller, than it won't live as long as a 10 pound yorkshire terrier in grandma's house being fed a regular diet and kept at a proper weight.
As to the food, and grains killing dogs, this is misqouted. The true story is that Diamond Pet foods (http://www.diamondpet.com/) , and several other companies that were owned by Diamond, including the Chicken Soup brand, were contaminated grain and did kill many dogs. But it is not the grain that killed them, its the bacteria. Read more about it here:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10771943/ The grain versus pure meat diet is false, as all animals need bulk in their diet. The amount of bulk you choose to feed is up to you, but keep in mind that Diamond used to be (before this incident) one of the higher classed food brands. Funny how that works out, isn't it? Every brand and every company will claim to be "the best", it's all seller's gimicks and biased marketing ploys. Keep all that in mind and you won't have a problem. A food cannot be judged on how good or bad it is just by it's price alone. If in doubt, research it, ask your vet, and ask other people you know what they are feeding their dogs. In the end, it's personal preference, not price, that should decide what brand of food to feed your dog, and don't think that a dog will not live as long because your not spending $75 a bag on dog food.

it really is frequently because of length and weight burdon. in case you imagine a chihuahua bouncing round compared to a Saint Bernard. The Saint Bernard has a lot extra weight to throw round and that motives extra rigidity on joints, inner organs and wide-spread nicely-being. Chihuahua's infrequently weigh a difficulty so are not causing as a lot rigidity to thier organs. the bigger the canines, the added the body has to artwork , the middle has to artwork even extra sturdy to pump blood to each and every of the organs, the added weight, the added rigidity it places on the body and joints. major to make positive that Any canines is healthful for its weight variety and in sturdy cardiovascular structure to delay its existence span. Its really a lot like saying - Why does a skinner/in good structure individual stay longer than an overweight individual.

Same reason people live different amounts of time. Genetics, health, blood pressure, weight, heart issues, organ issues, etc. You get the point.
