it raises your metabolism, but also to fall into a restorative level of sleep your body needs to actually drop its body temp. if you exercise last thing or late in the day your body has a harder time dropping temp b/c your metabolism is higher. so you won't rebuild muscle or get enough REM sleep.

Keep you jump started for the rest of the day. Will burn fats (more than calories) as you haven't eaten since previous night. Also can get fresher air early in the morning if you go outdoor.
Late afternoon exercise will most likely keep you wide awake around bedtime.

When you wake, your growth hormone levels are at the highest level of the day. Your body is also primed for fat burning before you eat. The combination makes early morning workouts optimal.

I talked a little about this in my 360 Blog from September 10.

I asked a club fitness trainer once, and she told me that everyone has their own preference on when to exercise. People who are more alive/active in the evening like working out during evenings, but people find more reasons to workout in the mornings.
It doesn't matter, calories are calories--you either took in more than you burned or less than you burned.
