You should catch the shuttle bus right outside the airport to KohSan Road. This is the major backpacker hub. There are tons and tons of places to stay. Just look around. Thailand is very easy to travel in. Don't worry. KohSan road is where most backpackers end up. Hope this helps!!

You did not say when you are traveling. This would be only for Don Muang Airport. I have not been to the new airport since it is supposed to open the end of September 2006. There are buses as some previous to me have alluded to. They go to various parts of Bangkok. You asked for shuttles which are non existent. There is the Taxi, costs between 100 Thai Baht(THB) to 400 THB depending on where you are going. Which is USD 2.65 to 7.90 or so including expressway tolls. If you want to ride in a little luxury you can take a limousine, which is usually at least a Toyota Camry, nice a clean and well airconditioned. Costs 700THB to 1200 THB again depending on where your hotel is. Or USD 18.50 to 31.60 plus expressway tolls. I believe. I used to use the East Asian Travel Co. I think they have a monopoly on the airport. Most of the drivers speak some english. I last used a taxi the last time I was at Don Muang Airport and had not previously because I was dubious of them at least at the airport. The taxi's are clean too. Just go to the taxi stand just outside and tell the attendant where you are going. Taxi Tip, I tip 10 THB per bag and /or give them the change. The locals do not tip big in Thailand. Bell hop same thing. OR you can arrange for your hotel to pick you up. This would be a little less than the limosine but, sometimes a nicer car. Maybe 100 THB to 300 THB less depending on where your hotel is in relation to the airport. And you can charge it to your room. There is no other mass transit to the airport right now. Actually not even the new airport has a subway or Skytrain. Good luck and have a safe trip.
P.S. The new airport seems to be a bit further away from CBD or central business district on Sukhumvit Road, than the current airport so be careful. You, which I assume you are a woman, may feel safer with either a limousine or the hotel car picking you up.

The new airport is scheduled to open on 28 September, and, therein, lies the problem. Everything and the added complications are yet to be experienced. The only sure thing is that there are sure to be some.
At the current airport, the best bet would have been to take the metered taxis located at the stand just outside the airport exit, fending off all the hustlers as you run the gauntlet. There are no airport shuffles per se; just standard routes which only run during daylight hours. A big pain, and not worth the inconvenience and price if you assure yourself that you book at the metered taxi stand.
NOW, as of 28 September, no metered taxis are allowed at the airport, although shuttle service is suppose to be provided to their stand 3 kilometers away. I've not heard of new shuttle arrangements, but I continue to think these would be dicey unless you specifically and unambiguously hear otherwise. Some hotels offer services now for a charge (unless you are staying a minimum number of nights at a first class hotel) ,and I still think that you will find metered taxis the most cost effective and convenient way into town.
If this sounds confused, it is! Good luck.

Anyone who charge you $20 for a ride from the airport to a hotel in Bangkok is not a friend. But your getting ripped off. Mike is right on about the taxi at the old airport. But as of today when you arrive at the new airport if you take one of those limo's are expensive, and if you want a taxi you need to take the shuttle bus to the bus and taxi stop about 3 km away. People here are complaining about this. Hope it change. Good Luck, remember meter taxi only. From the old airport it cost no more the 250 baht to go anywhere in central bkk.

Here are the problems and what to look out for, right now they are still using Don Muang airport but at the end of the month they are going to change to the new airport, and have changed a lot of the rules also for Taxi's, they have already switched some flights to the new airport as of the 15th of september. Here is the scoop on the old one, when you come out of customs, turn left, because if you turn right it is where all of us local people park our cars and meet people, so go to the left side and to the end you can book a van or find out about a limo etc, right outside you get in a Q tell the girl what hotel and she will tell you how much and give you a slip so you can not be cheated, but a cheaper way, as a local, I take the elevator to the next level wait until a taxi pulls up to drop a person off and then get in tell them your hotel, but also tell them METER, if they say no meter tell them yut T nee, stop here now, and get out and take another one but if he uses the meter, go, during the day tell the driver tollway, you have to pay, but it will be cheaper than sitting in traffice with the meter running, night time no problem, don't need the tollway! Now the new airport and the changes, you must take a shuttle bus 8 clicks outside of the airport to where the taxi's are unless you hire a limo, bad news and expensive, but as of yesterday, according to the Bangkok Post newspaper, if a taxi drops off you can stop him and take that taxi, that is what you want to do but don't Forget, key word METER, NO METER GET OUT,YOU'LL GET TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS! CHOKE DEE AND WELCOME TO bkk! That's Thai for Good Luck! Don't listen to people who tell you most of the people in Thailand speak english, NO WAY, most tax's drivers haven't a clue, maybe hello and say to you go where, ake a print out of your hotel over the net, try cheap hotels.com

the public bus service from the airport has 4 different routes and the drivers will know most hotels. they will drop you as close as possible but if you have luggage, take an airport taxi, everything is very civilized, unlike Manila, which is a nightmare.
if you're staying at a good hotel, they should have a pick-up service.

It's easy to get ripped off. Ask your hotel for advice or, I know a great car and driver who will take care of you good and fair for about $20 US. Want to know his emai address? He'll meet you and greet you and take you to your hotel. I always use him when I arrive and depart BKK.
