Hi there...any over the counter flea product used for bathing may be possible reaction to the toxins. Some regular shampoo products also can accidentally be ingested when a cat later grooms himself sometime after he's been dried from bathing if all residue wasn't thoroughly rinsed.

Drooling excessively after bath

Q: Dr.Mike - I have a 7 year old healthy male cat, neutered since 6 mos., goes out doors only during the day occasionally. Yesterday I took him in to be groomed (belly shave) they bathed him too of course. He was at the vet for about 7 hrs when I picked him up. Ever since we got home yesterday, I noticed that if he sneezes he has a huge amount of clear drool I guess you would call it hanging all around his mouth. Tonight it is very excessive...what is this? and what should I do? - S.

A: I suspect your cat is fine by now. Drooling excessively is not uncommon in cats after bathing, especially if flea control medications were applied during the bath. The only time this is a significant problem is when a product such as an organophosphate dip has been used, in which case drooling can be a sign of toxicity. It is always good to check with the groomer and/or your vet when you see this sign, just to be cautious.

If the drooling continues definitely check with your vet.

The shower gel should have been safe. Dawn detergent is safe for cats.

I would take a good look in his mouth and check out his gums and teeth. Anything red or angry looking in there and the vet needs to clean the teeth or recommend something for them.

It could be a number of things.
How old is your cat? Could he be cutting teeth?
Have you looked into his mouth? He may have an injury.
Did you wash him in pet shampoo and rinse him thoroughly? If not it would be a reaction tho the soap you used.
Has he been out of doors? It's possible he got into something not so good.

Other things you should check...
Are his eyes bright and clear?
Is he alert?
Does he walk with his tail held up?
Is his appetite good?
Is his water intake and output normal?
Is her sensitive to touch anywhere?
Does he have any rashes or missing fur?

The bath does not hurt your cat, trust me my poor cats get a bath twice a month. If your kitty is drooling maybe because she is hungry, or my kitty drools when she snuggles.
