by law, they have to give you more than a week's notice, so i am suprised you are waiting til now. but no, unless you have some sort of garnishment stating the house and the contents, then the contents are yours...but it is your responsibility to move them out, and you will be locked out after that deadline, so better get a storage unit. have you tried to get a payment plan? can't hurt to ask, but sounds like too late. good luck!

There is a lot you have not told us about this situation. They didn't post a letter to pay up on so short a notice without a whole lot of complicated, time consuming legal activity coming beforehand which you ignored or did not appear for.

Where I live, property taxes go to support things like the fire department, schools, police and other social infrastructure things. I have to set aside $300 per month to pay my taxes. If they have gotten to the point of seizing the property to get back taxes, it is seriously in arrears and dozens of notices and letters must have been ignored. They are not going to take your house over nickels and dimes. So, I suspect the week you are talking about is the end of a very long chain of events you have not informed us about. The county where I live (an unicorporated area) has gone to great lengths NOT to take a house. My county will work out monthly partial payments. They will take anything, any amount on account as a partial payment. People on public assistance get fees and penalties waived. Taking a house is the absolute LAST resort. But, if it has gone this far down the long road to a tax sale, the contents of the house are still yours. The property taxes only apply to the real estate and structure improvements. There will be some point in time by which you must vacate. At that point they lock the door behind you and if you have not removed your things, you've lost them. I just can't believe you let this situation get to this point.

In Illinois you pay your taxes in 2 installments. June and Sept. If you don't pay your taxes at that time you will be charged interest on the payment. After November the interest rate jumps quite a bit more. Sometime in December or January they can sell your house for back taxes. The person who buys it then has to wait until the grace period ends. (which is 2 years from the time your taxes are due) in the mean time you can pay on your taxes. If you pay it all off before the grace period is over then they return the title for your property to you. Call the County Treasurer in you city and see what options you have. Good Luck.

Depends on your location, but most places they can padlock the house on that date, so you'd be wise to get your stuff out if you're not going to try to save the house. There should be a phone number on the papers they posted - call them and ask.

Good luck.
