In Oz..Adlibbing..for sure..(Just used for filling in and keeping the vocal chords warmed up)..There is also another use, I recently discovered..while adlibbing and filling in, scale up to the just under the next note you have to reach..works every time..(Shania Twain does it, everytime too)..

It is called vocalizing. I watch music videos with the closed captioning on, and that's what they call it.

It depends on the context in which they are singing. In the context of Jazz it is called "scat". In other contexts it is merely called "vocalization".

there's not really a specific term for it. just say that the singer is vocalizing or riffing
