As the saying goes, once the gift is given, the receiver can do whatever they like with it. It 's not like you just got the gift, you've had it for a year already. I see nothing wrong with selling it for something more new and improved since they are probably changing every year anyway. But just look at it from your parents; point of view for a second, they are from an entirely different generation with a different set of beliefs. In their time as teenagers,it was considered as rude to sell or give away a gift.Have you explained to them the way you explained it on here? That you appreciate the gift but the quinceanera will hold fonder memories?Even the new ipod nano will not mean as much to you as your quinceanera in a couple of years.

Keep your mini and try EARNING the money for the nano. You are 16 now. You should be able to get a part-time job at circuit city, best buy, target or someplace that sells the ipod that you want. Working at one of those places gives you the advantage of getting an employee discount which will bring the price of that nano down.
So sit down and talk to your parents about getting part-time job. Explain to them why you want a part-time job.
But don't sell a gift that they gave you from their hearts. To do so is like saying; "Your gift is okay but what I want is better. So I am going to sell the one you gave me and get a better one"
Anyway, once your parents see that you are willing to earn your own money to by it they may offer to help you by paying for half or getting it for you as a Christmas gift. Good luck

It is very selfish to sell an expensive gift that your parents bought you for a special occasion.
And why do you want the Nano? Just for the color? Use your head! That's a lame reason.
Besides, Apple will come out with something newer and better in a few months. And a few months after that. And a few months after that.
Learn to appreciate what you have. Otherwise, you'll fall into a trap of always being unhappy and wanting something newer and better.

Durable gifts, like jewelry, etc., carry sentimental value and last through the ages. The problem with giving technology gifts for significant events is that the technology quickly becomes obsolete, as happened with your ipod. I understand your parents' dismay at your unhappiness with the ipod now, but to hang onto it forever would be like expecting you to still have an 8-track tape player today, still use it, and be happy with it, because they gave it to you 25 years ago for a right of passage. If you don't know what an 8-track is, therein lies my point.
Explain to your parents that you LOVE their gift and you are thrilled with it. But tell them that in the last year it has become a dinosaur. You really wish it hadn't because of what it means to you, but sadly it won't be useful in the manner intended for much longer. If they eventually agree to let you sell it for a newer one, be prepared for the fact this issue will repeat itself. Consider selling it and getting a nice little piece of jewelry or something you can cherish, and agree that you might get some new technology for Christmas or your birthday.
Generally speaking, once a gift is given the recipient can do whatever they like with it. This is a special case as it was a gift for an "ocasión especial." Tread lightly.

Thats really complicated but there is really nothing wrong with selling it. But I guess your parents just want you to keep it for there own sentimental reasons. I think you should respect your mom & dads wishes and just keep what you have its not worth hurting your parents feelings. If you really want the new ipod you should just save up money for it or something. Hope you make the right choice.

I would only sell it if it's in good condition.. but yeah if I wanted an i-pod nano I would sell the mini... nano's are better anyways. It's an i-pod, it's not a life or death situation that you really could regret later.

A gift is a gift. When the gift was given to you it became yours. You can do whatever you want with it. I got a Nintendo one year for my birthday and sold it to get a new one and sold it to get a PlayStation and sold it to get a PS2. It was my Bday gift. If someone gives you $1,000 dollars as a gift, will you not spend it? Or would spending it be getting rid of the gift? lol, i know, that's silly. But my point is that you were given something, why would they care if you used that to get something you would rather want, and in the process, get something even better? Your happiness is what they want you to have and they should want you to never get rid of their love for you. So, sell that ipod and get what you want.

I believe with something like an iPod, where technological advances in it come out so often, it MAY be understandable. However, I think you should listen to what you think is right.

Well I would not ,but if you don't use it anyway just explain to your parents that you don't use it because of the color, if they say no again just help out more around the house and if that does not work start begging that's what I do, trust me... and it usually works.
