A correctional officer's mission is to provide a safe and secure environment for the inmates, thereby providing a safe and secure environment for the community. The inmate's punishment is being in prison, separated from family, friends, and society in general. The correctional officer does not inflict additional punishment but is, instead, clear and consistent with his/her expectations.

A good CO will protect the inmates. A lot of them aren't there for life and will eventually be returned to society. It we're not going to protect them then we should require judges to say "I sentence you to 5 years of a**rape and beatings." How can this raise your chances of becoming a productive member of society? Especially people who get put in for non-violent offenses such as drugs and come out violent people. C.O.'s need to make sure the environment is condusive to rehabilitation because being there is punishment enough.
