I have used two different types. One was an Optrel Satellite. I really enjoyed that helmet because it was auto darkening, you could adjust the shade from 5 - 13, there's a grinding button that will keep it from darkening when your grinding, and it was completely solar powered, No Batteries. I killed it though, in the back of my truck under a bunch of tools..... The second is the Miller Elite. I am using this right now, but there are some drawbacks. It has everything the Optrel does, but there is a power button you have to hit and it takes batteries. I got this because I switched welding suppliers and they didn't carry the optrels and I needed a helmet. I like this a little more because the glass is a lot bigger and provides better views.
By the way these both run about $275. but for the money they are great for production work, All processes and positions, and they are real time savers.

There are all kinds of stores that sell welding helmets. If you want new, you can look at any store that sells welders or welding supplies. Seriously, online you can buy from Lowes, Sears, NAPA, Lincoln Welders, even Walmart. Take your pick, from $30 to $300 or more. I really like the auto-darkening feature on the new ones.

brand or type? i myself prefer Jackson hoods. most auto darken hoods allow you to adjust the shade for your lens rather than physically changing the lens. but if you go with an auto, shop around first and check out the different brands and find on that fits your needs best. i don't use auto darken hoods mainly because i don't want it to fall 100 foot to the ground breaking the lens and being out a few hundred bucks.
