You would'nt get sick, it's part of the corn plant, but SUPER TOUGH and I doubt you could eat it if you tried. It's there to hold the mesa (corn meal) and filling: chicken, beef, cheese,or chiles verdes etc. together while steaming.

You can eat the husk if you like but it wouldn't taste very good. The husk is used to hold the guts of the tamale together during the cooking.

I would unwrap the tamale and toss the husk.

the husk is made of dried corn cob leaves. If you ate it it would be a lot of fiber, good to clean your digestive tract, but not that tasty. I have never seen people eat the husks, in the US or Mexico. Many people keep them apart to feed to animals or to toss on compost piles.

Remove the corn husk and throw it away. If you have a banana leaf wrapped tamal throw the banana leaf away also.

You peel back the corn leaf and put salsa on it and eat it from the husk while it's hot.
