Do a search to see if there is an animal rescue group working in your area. You don't say if you know what the breed is. If it is easy to identify the breed or the dominant breed, sometimes there is a rescue group for specific breeds. Sometimes they will take the animal in and that would give you an alternative to taking the dog to a kill shelter. You can also check the local papers for ads to see if anyone is looking for their lost pet. The animal shelter also sometimes has call ins for particular animals. You can call them to see if anyone has been looking for an animal that meets that description. Some shelters even have a bulletin board where you can post a found notice, if you are able to care for the animal for a while. Just make a few calls. Maybe you can find a vet that would look at the animal for a low fee just to assess the general health of the dog. Try to get some nourishment into the dog while you are figuring out what you can do. Best of luck and you are a good person to do something for this poor animal that others have overlooked or ignored.

I thank you and the dog thanks your for your concern.
Though the dog's well being is very, very important, please be sure not to get bit. Just because she has tags is no guarantee.
I understand that this is not your dog and you cannot afford to take her to the vet -- but can you afford a little dog food and some clean water? Do that, if you can.
Call your local Humane Society or Animal Control (try to call a no-kill shelter, first).
Most or all of my local newspapers will place FREE lost & found ads, try contacting your local newspaper(s).
Or, perhaps, you know of some dog lovers in your area, they may be able to take her in or assist you in some way.
Or you can call a local vet, explain the situation, and they may be able to help.
Please be very careful around this dog. She may or may not have had her shots. Do what you can to help the dog, just do not put yourself or your family in jeopary.
Thank you again for doing something.

Food is one thing for this stray dog. Probably worms are putting her at risk as well. Try to call around and find breeders who will at least look at the dog for you and give you immediate help. There are rescue phone numbers in the daily papers under dogs for sale or lost and found. Many vets will help if you will just tell the truth about the dog.
Try feeding her easy to eat things like cottage cheese or soup until you can get help.
Also a product out there for about $8.00 at pet stores called "Nutracal" which is a high caloric paste for sick doggies and they can live on it for days. A big doggie will take a few teaspoons, a small doggie just fingerfulls at a time. Please contact a vet, they are usually great at helping as they didn't get into business by not liking animals, especially ones in desperate need.

Give the dog small amouts of water at first. If you have rice, boil some and when it cools, you can mix in scrambled egg or boiled, not fried, very lean ground meat. Hand feed this dog maybe a half cup in small amounts. If you allow the dog to eat it on its own, it will probably bolt the food and it may vomit because the stomach isn't used to holding any food. Maybe in a couple hours, feed it some more. In a day or two you can mix in some dry dog food. As the days go by decrease the rice and increase the dog food. Feed the dog twice a day after that. There is a feeding table on the bags of dog food that will tell you how to feed a dog according to their normal weight.
All that the dog needs to get better, is food and love.

Give her food and water!! Feed her what you have on hand to start with and watermake sure the food you give is not old or bad she will be weak and and could get die from old rotten food. Make sure the collar is not grown into her neck. If you can go get her some canned chicken or get some chicken and boil it for her. Soak up a bi tof the chicken juice with a litte bread give tha tto her with the chicken. She will need the carbs from the bread and teh protein from the chicken. Be sure it is very cool before you put it down for her. Just give her lots of food and water. And hope for the best.
A little sugar in her water. A few potatoe chips would give her a little salt that she needs.
Avod the dog food for a few days. Dry or canned. The bacterial count in dog food is pretty high. No hamburger to start too much fat she does not need loose stools it could kill her. NO milk products. Nothing greasy or fatty. Chicken boiled with a bit of rice would good. After a few days you could work her on to dog food. If you give her canned tuna give her the in water kind not in oil.
This dog really needs the chicken but she needs carbs too. If you have some ceral on hand like you would have for breakfast a litle bowl or dry cereal NO MILK to go with other food.
BEfore you surrender th edog to your local amimal protectoin make sure they will treat it MOST WILL NOT!!!!!!!
Good luck

I know my local vet will take an animal in and get it healthy if you tell them it is a stray. I am not trying to be cruel but if there is no hope for it my vet will put it to sleep so it doesn't suffer. Or contact a dog rescue group...they will help.

Well there are some places like vet offices that know some people that can afford to take care of animals till they are better then find them a nice home. Check your vet's office see what they can do. I am sure they will do whatever is necessary in helping you and the cute puppy.

Call Animal Control. They will take the dog to the vet and try to find the owner. The dog may have a chip in it or a tattoo to help to identify it. Lots of luck.

Give her pedialite or some kind of electrolite to make sure she is not dehydrated too. Feed her small meals and give her fresh clean water and hope for the best. If you give her encouragement and love that will help a lot too. Broth that is not greasy soaked on the dog food or warm water will make the food easier to digest and hopefully will get her on her path quicker.
