5201. License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging, shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground, except as follows:

Don't bother with the exceptions... they are for special vehicles like trash trucks, tractors, etc.

So what's the deal, you got no front bumper? A license plate laying on your dashboard is not gonna cut it. You will get pulled over and ticketed for improper display of your plate.

Probably, but some people place their plates inside their car to make them harder for others to steal. Me, I´m from IL and guess where my front plate is.... under the front passenger seat ha ha. After having gotten tired of having it replaced multiple times from theft or flying off going down the interstate I gave up. Never have been able to find a plate holder that fits the front end of my car well.

Believe it or not, I´ve NEVER been stopped because my front plate is missing, but got stopped several times because it was hanging off halfway!

well of course Why do you think the cars have a place for them on the bumper? Not all states have two plates but the ones that do want them put there where they can see them

I would imagine so. The license plate is supposed to go on the vehicle where it can be seen and I doubt the license plate can be seen clearly in your dashboard. I would think you could receive a ticket for this.

There are certain circumstances where you can temporarily have a license plate on your dashboard. If it has fallen off and you have to write your license number on a piece of paper you can do that temporarily and if you don't have a place on your car to mount it. However, you may still be stopped for it not being on there and get a warning to have it mounted where it needs to be. Just make sure if you have to do this, that it's only temporary and that it is visible with no obstructions (i.e. stickers on your windshield, etc.).

Depending on the state, yes, if the licence plate is not displayed properly they can stop you, and write you a ticket.

Normally we did not write a ticket for it, but used it to stop people and check for other things and issued a warning for the plate.
