Depending where the street lights or the sun is shining, sometimes as you're walking, they tend to move from behind you to the front of you. When a dog is walking and sees their shadow moving along the ground, they don't understand the phenomenon and so they might bark or maybe they are just in a playful mood.
One of my dogs is losing her eyesight due to diabetese and can't see well. She sometimes barks at her own shadow and lunges at it because she can't quite make it out. It's a sad thing, but sometimes I want to laugh at what she does.

Do they? I've not witnessed this. When I moved,a large mirror was on the floor. One of my dogs would see himself in there and barked and chased his reflection. A friend had to give up their dog, as they had tile floors and the dog would see his reflection and try to attack it, smacking his face into the floor and bleeding all over. But shadows....?

Dogs can only see in two dimensions...they probably think it is something other than their own shadow.
