I want to do something helpful for the elderly and my idea is to visit one person on a weekly basis and read the newspaper or some periodical to them and discuss with them, as a way to give them some social interaction if they are lonely. Do you think this would be a good idea as a charitable act and would the nursing home sallow that?

great idea. Ask about their "wards of the state". They have no family hence wards of the state. I recently began visiting a nursing home where I live. The first one I tried to visit told me I needed to see their social worker. The next one I went to the door was wide open and there was no need for me to see a social worker and I was able to visit that very day. Sometimes I read scriptures with them but mostly I just listen. They have such intresting lives they have lived and are so excited to have someone just sit and listen to them. So rewarding now to go there and see their faces light up when they see me! Funny I went to give of myself and found they have given me so much more than I ever expected!
Have fun :)

Yes. I worked in a Nursing Home and we had people come over to interact with the residents. The residents were absolutely thrilled to have someone who took the time to talk with them and give them company. Some of them would bring their pets or play cards and so on. Go to a Nursing Home and talk with the director or administrator.

That is an excellent idea! Many of the residents cannot see well enough to read any more and still want to keep up with current events or read a book. Many of them have no visitors...ever and would love to hear a friendly voice and have someone treat them as a person that matters.
I am sure that you would be allowed to do this in almost any senior residence.

Yes, they would love to have you - they might want to do a check on you to make sure that you are not trying to befriend someone and then steal all of their money (very common when older people make a new friend, they are very trusting) -

Are you intending on making this a part of your life, or just for a month or so until you get tired of them? So many "charities" work that way.

If you want to do this, I would recommend that you write up a little about yourself, and then ask the nursing home to help you in who might enjoy your company.

Sure, just pick a nursing home and ask to volunteer.

Why don't you call a nursing home where you live and ask them that question? They will be more than happy to answer your question. I would also expect a welcome mat.

You would probably be swamped with requests to do more of the same.
