Go with the first answer. I've asked Sheldon Brown some questions before. He's right on the money and has been quick with the answers.

Another good source is www.bikeman.com. From their home page, on the left side, look for the "Single-Speed Store" under custom stores. Click on that, then look for "Complete Single Speed Conversion Kits" on the menu. Click there, and purchase. If you have any questions, email them or give them a call, they are very helpful. As for how to install, you might ask them if it comes with instructions. If you are familiar at all with working on a bike, it is pretty easy to do, since you are eliminating all the gears, derallieurs, cassette, chain ring, etc. The only new part, really, is the chain tensioner, which attaches where your rear derallieur would normally attach.

Otherwise, somewhere like Sheldonbrown.com probably has instructions.

if you want it into a single speed just locate the sprocket that aligns best with your front sprocket and shorten your chain to go onto the 2 sprockets and not through the deraulier system. or else use your stop screws on your derauliers and block it from moving. that is the cheepest way to make it into the 1 speed.

Try Cambria Bikes ( www.cambriabikes.com ) ---they sell for dirt jump and downhill kits and would gladly assist you in your single speed kit----there's also Wheelworld ( www.wheelworld.com ).
