Probably. Most people back then drank and smoked because they didn't know the health effects. It was also just part of the culture.

Now I do not have any evidence that Mr Orwell was a drinker other than what was in his mainly autobiographical works.
In my humble opinion he did not seem to be a man of the Temperance movement. But it beggars the question if homosexuality is the preference of the Hawaian.

George Orwell used to be a regular in my local and as i can remeber he used to drink quite alot but he couldnt really take it. He had a bunch of friends and they used to sit in the corner... poets corner we used to call it and they was a right bunch of tossers.
