Since I own and operate an animal shelter I can tell you with absolute certainty that I would be grateful to be off the street, in a warm comfortable environment (even if it is a small one), happy to have food in my belly, a vet to take care of me, someone to cut all the mats and burs out of my fur, someone to walk me, and care for me! Someone to spay me so that I would not to keep having litter after litter of puppies. Someone to get my vaccinations so I would not die of parvo or distemper. There would be no one to hurt me, hit me, starve me, use me to train fighting dogs, etc. And I would have an opportunity to find a loving forever home.

No.
I just recued a dog who has spent 6.5 of her 7 years in a shelter. I bring her home and she is afraid of everything. The shelter, though does the best that they can with the resources that they have, cannot provide any animal with all that they need.
Again, no, I could not handle being a shelter dog for even one day.
When I adopted her, I was not really wanting to get another dog, but her story pulled at my heart, and I could not let her just live out the rest of her days like that. Now she knows family instead of lonliness.
I would say to anyone of REALLY wants a dog or even a cat, get a SHELTER DOG first.

I doubt it. That's why one of my cats is from a shelter. The other two were born in our garage! (^_^)
Some shelters are good, though. Sorry to come off badly. The shelter I got mine from was really bad, way too many cats in way too little space.

I would be sad and confused. I would wonder why my family had left me in such a place, what had I done to deserve this? Who are all of these strangers? Why are all of these dogs barking? Where is my comfy sofa that I like to snooze on? Isn't anybody going to take me for a walk, I gotta go and I know better than to go inside?

"Where'd my people go? They said they'd never leave me...why did I believe them? It's true, they're gone. Where'd my people go? What did I do to deserve this? Where will my next meal come from? Will this place love me or will they hit me? Will I live or will I die? I have no one to curl up next to at night-no warm bed nor fresh air. Where are the kids? I love them. They need me. I need them. Where am I? What's going to happen? Who are all these people? Why do they keep talking to me? Are they going to take me to my people? Am I going home with them? Will they be nice or will they leave me too?"

Yes I foster for FUCHS and my dogs are very well taken care of, they are in big open 10x20 kennels with food and water and they get to come out everyday for play time... Doesn't seem to bad a life to me...
