It depends as to which one you are looking at I will do my best to explain them and will give you my experience after that.
Paraguard (10years and hormone free) This is designed for women who have already light periods and barely any cramping as this form of IUD CAN make it worse in some cases (women who have light periods) might have an absence of their period.
Mirena (5years and has hormones) This one is designed for the women like me who have heavy flows and horrible cramping (been hospitalized for this b4). I have not seen a period in 3 years since I had it inserted
Both IUDS:
You should have at least have 1 child because 1. The uterus of a woman who has had at least 1 child is larger than a woman who hasn't (those who don't have children have a larger chance of expelling it. 2. It may cause infertility at the time of removal since it is yanked out by ur DR. Pregnancy rate is less than 1 out of a 100. 10 out of 100 will expel within the 1st year (hence the horror stories) .08% of women will have the IUD perforate their uterus. Fertility should regain as soon as the IUD is removed personally i would give my uterus to heal a good 2-3 months before TTC simply bc there might have been a small amount of scarring and due to that you might not be able to sustain a pregnancy
You should be in a serious relationship bc if you do happen to get an infection its harder to treat but the IUD itself dosent cause infection like so many women on here say.
The way the IUD wrks is also unknown its speculated that it changes the lining in the uterus to rederict sperm it also blocks the egg from implanting but none is really known its wats believed all they know is that it does wrk!
I had my Mirena inserted 3 years ago at 4 weeks post partum (which shouldnt be done but I took my chances) I spotted for the 1st 3 months esp after sex. My significant other DID feel the strings in the beggining but with time they softened with vaginal secretions and semen. I cant use hormonal methods but Mirena has such a low dose that it dosent get into your blood stream and stays localized. You can go home that same day and have unprotected sex with your significant other

I have the Merena IUD. I chose this over the depo shot because I didn't want to worry about going to the Doctor every few months to get a shot, it's good for 5 years. And then if you decide you want kids before then, the doctor just takes it out. All you have to worry about is your yearly pap. Thus far I love it. The IUD is actually a bit better at preventing pregnancy than the shot. Although I have read that it's better to get an IUD after you have had a child, there's a less chance you will expel the IUD. You won't get a period while you have the IUD either, it's not painful for either partner. It hurts a little when they put it in, but not bad at all. The IUD is much better now than what it used to be too. Any other questions let me know! Melashell@yahoo.com

I have the Mirena IUD and so far I love it! It is so nice not having to worry because I forgot to take my pill..which is why I had my son 2 months ago. I love him more than anything and cant imagine my life without him but my husband and I wanted to wait a few more years before we had kids. With the IUD we can be intimate without the worry. The IUD had actually increased my sex drive which has been great for our relationship. The only downfall is occasionally my husband will hit it..he says it is just a little uncomfortable, but it never hurts bad enough to make us stop. When you get the IUD it just feels like bad period cramps. It only takes about 5 minutes or less to insert. I had cramps for about 2-3 days after. You should also know that an IUD is effective the moment they put it in, and ineffective the moment they take it out..how nice is that. Well good luck with it.

I too have the merena iud, & I'm not having any problems that I am aware of. I just had a hard time getting over the idea of something being inside me. It is better than the old ones, because the string is plastic i believe, and won't encourage infections. Also, DRs discourage anyone who is childless from using this method. I hve heard horror stories of the IUD being implanted in the babies brain and causing miscarriages. However, I assume that the iud would be removed once pregnacy is detected. Also, my periods are almost non-existant.

My mom had that, it worked for her however my dad had many complains. Aparently during sex his member kept hitting the iud and would hurt him.. a lot. My mom had it before I was born so having kids after is possible. That's all I know about it though. Not very popular these days I guess.

I hate it because it makes you bleed longer than other birth control methods. I remember the month after I got it my period lasted for a 1 month to 1 1/2 month long. I would choose somethin different.

I know this sounds weird coming from a guy, but my wife had it. To sum it all up, she hated it. It was painful for both of us. (use your imagination as to when) Her period lasted longer than normal, and came more frequently. Her cramping became uncontrollable. It did it's job...she never got pregnant. But, she had for about 8 months before having it removed. I know she would never recommend it to anybody. We heard many success stories, but unfortunately, she had nothing but a bad experience with it. It isn't for everybody...you might have better luck with it. Hope this helps!!

Mine works fine. It wasn't fun having it put it but it wasn't worse than any cramps I'd had. My cycle is light and regular but it always has been. It's nice using something you don't have to think about.
