I can do a down stroke, but when I try to do an up stroke, as in strumming, my pick gets caught in the strings. How do I prevent this? Also, I know how the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is played, but how do you do the main riff part where you have to mute the strings without getting your pick caught?

Try playing with a very thin nylon pick... Get a few different thicknesses to get the hang of it... Also, use a little finesse and try not to strum so hard on the strings... Try to pass over them without so much arm-swing and more wrist-turning...

Just takes practise, maybe you should find someone to teach you, you can learn much more quickly with someone who knows.
