Ok I have had my kitten for about a week and my older cat whos a simaise thats bout 18 yrs old is just a hissing at the newcomer, he hisses at her(the new kitten) and then runs out the room outside(where I really don't want him) so now what do? I really love my older cat and want him to be happy, but again i know that he wont last forever, hense the newcomer to help the pain for when the time comes. I want them to get along, is it just going to take more time? or is it not even possible for them to get along?she seems to be getting along ok with the two dogs.

Give it lots of time. My older cat tolerates the baby now, but she still hisses at her. At first I was so scared they'd never get along, but now they're mostly fine. They give eachother baths and stuff. Give it time. Dont' force anything.

I had the same problem when I brought home a new kitten to face my older cat. Don't worry. You 18 year old will get used to the newcomer within a few weeks. The older cat will just get used to the kitten and just ignore it for the most part. Good Luck!

Congrats at a new kitten. We had the same problem, we had a cat of two years, I went to the pound and got a kitten. The older cat would hiss, growl for about one week. We slowly introduced each other and about the 2nd week, now they play with each other it just takes time for the older cat to get along!

I think your cat is to old to deal with a young one and is use to being the main cat of the home. Just don't let the new one run your older cat off, teach it to leave him alone by picking him up and away from the older cat. Or keep the new one in a separate room . Your right your 18 yr old won't be around much longer and deserves the love and respect it has always had and not feel replaced.

okay just let them get to know each other and give it some more time. Eventually they should like each other better. Cats aren't very good with newcomers in the family. Your cat will get used to the kitten soon. Good Luck!

This will take time--probably a few more weeks. For now, only bring the cats together for short periods, while you are present to watch them. Let each cat have a safe place where he can be away from the other. Provide separate food and water and a separate litter box for each cat. Gradually increase the time that the cats are together. Eventually they'll get used to each other.

That's really a trial for the old guy. I hope you are not projecting negative energy to him about his impending demise. Really love him up as much as you can and don't let the kitten bug him to death. It's good the kitten is doing well with the dogs.
Your old one may never really take to the kitten and you should protect him from having his food bowl raided, his naps disturbed and his place beside you usurped by the newcomer.

It just takes time. We went thru that with our kitten and older cat. We kept them seperated till we could tell the older one wouldnt hurt the kitten. Theyll end up best briends. Dont worry.

Keep at it. It will take a lot of time as the older cat feels the younger one is infringing on its turf and is showing his dominance. Once the little one shows that it is not the alpha things should be better.
