I keep hearing that they are asking for an apology but I am not sure what was actually said.

He said that the use of violence to promote religion is evil and that Islam has historically had a tendency to use violence in just that way.

To protest the pope's comments, Muslims firebombed churches today, thereby proving that he was totally right.

he (mis?)quoted words from Mohammed about the necessity of a djihad, a saint war, a crusade, actually, when you refer to the time the terms were used (9th century after JC, when the real crusades were about to begin), and added - the pope - that no war should be led in the name of God or Allah. He probably forgot that 1100 years ago, Christians were no better, and Muslims felt stigmatized as followers of a violent religion.

The Pope said (in Lebanon, I think) that Muhammad was a person who taught destructive principles and beliefs that encouraged murder in the name of a religion. That's pretty much what he said. Many hated it. Some called it a reflection of a Byzantine-era way of thinking about other religions, and that the Pope's statement did nothing to contribute to unity between Christianity and Islam. I believe the Prime Minister of Lebanon was pretty angry, too. I think the Pope is right, though.

He quoted a Byzantine Emperor who called Mohammad barbic and evil, and said that Muslim believed in spreading faith by the sword, welcome to WWIII The 21st Century Crusade. I don't want it, I can gues you dont' want it, but the extremists want it, and they extremists sadly have to power to declare it.
