I'm not judging, and don't just want to hear "You're right". I'm looking for an honest explanation from someone who feels these reactions are justified.

I'm hoping you can explain to me why when some Muslims are offended by cartoons or comments that portray Muslims as being violent, that they respond with threats, rioting, and violence. Doesn't that make them guilty of the stereotypes they're rebelling against?

The Muslim world had never ever insulted Jesus christ in the history of Islam, but christian followers had insulted the Prophet Muhammad many times. Jesus Christ, and Prophet Muhammad were the holiest among the holy, and a worthy of our praises. The only way to bring peace to this world is that the followers of Jesus christ or Muhammad must be respectful of each others. The anger should never be unleashed on the founders of these great religions. All of us had fallen behind on the teachings of these great leaders, and instead of admitting our shortcomings, we are indulged in the name callings of the Holy ones, i:e Jesus Christ and The Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon them) Please come together, and help each other to find common grounds for peace, after all we all are from the almighty God or Allah, and he is the one we shall return.

YES... Muslims in the Middleeast are going through the Middle Ages, like Christianity in the Middle Ages (Dark Ages). Have you noticed that Western Muslims don't do riots, but peaceful demonstrations or dialogue? the middle east is expressing an upheveal because the people are not at rest because the society doesn't allow people to express themselves, but the riots is a way from them to vent on frustrations inside. they will not stop acting this way until the Middle East evolves to a democracy. Remember Muhammad came almost 600 years after Jesus. So we (Muslim civilization) are about 600 years behind. If you research the dark ages in Europe, you will see it is undenibly the same, there too were also riots, and the government controled people by using Christinity, and remember the proptestant sect came, to support literacy and the freedom to be a self study Christian. The restlessness you see happening in the Arab world is simply Europe reoccuring. It the natural process of government and society. Wish i was Muslim during the Prophet Muhammad time, or 1000 years from now. But I am grateful for life and maybe things will work out for the best. A big maybe for anytime soon. Muslim in Western Society reflect how Muslims and government 1000 or so years will act. Maybe less, Bush is not all that stupid you know, but he is evil. His application and articulation are just not the best that's all. Real Democracy in the East is the only way to divert violence. But I'm afraid the people will have to do it themselves. U.S. foreign policy maybe delaying that change.
Now Muslim point of View: Muslims feel an obligation to protect the Prophet of Islam, if we didn't speak up, it would have been like we were agreing with him. Most of us fear God and believe it is sacrial religious to let people walk over your faith.
He went through a lot to bring Islam to us, he was a noble man and doesn't desever to be lied about.

I am not Muslim - nor am I Christian for that matter. I read what the Pope said and thought it was unfortunate and unnecessary. I would hope it was simply a poor choice of words as he is a new Pope - although like any public figure of his stature - what he says resonates around the world.

Since I am not knowledgeable about the Islamic religion, I can only state things I have read and heard. It is my understanding that any depiction or representation of god or prophets is considered sacrilegious and blasphemy.

Personally I wish the whole world would just take a deep breath and step back. It seems as if everyone everywhere takes everything so darn personally and assumes the worst. So sad. We are all perpetuating the violence and it seems that an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is the law of the land. So, yes, I guess they (and we) are all guilty of the stereotypes and the stereotyping.

No Muslims here yet!

First, they were horrible cartoons. Except for that one with the turban bomb and even it was second rate.

I guess NO one in Denmark is as good as Oliphant or Larson.

I still to this day remember the Oliphant one where Richard Nixon has lifted up his stuffed shirt press secretary with one hand while ducking down and heading towards a group of reporters saying:

Edgy, edgy, who'se edgy!

No one can beat the US for making fun at themselves and living with it!

Sometimes even the Brits are pretty good at it with Spamalot and the Life of Brian.

I just found this one:

Editorial cartoon isn’t funny to many Catholics

By Meghan Dorney

An editorial cartoon that critics contend portrays religious sisters who teach in schools as violent and uncompassionate has caused intense reaction from Catholics in the archdiocese. The Boston Globe estimates that over 100 people contacted them to protest the cartoon that appeared March 1.

The cartoon causing the stir was drawn by syndicated cartoonist Pat Oliphant and depicts a tall nun holding a ruler and looming over a bloody and beaten young Mel Gibson. A light bulb appears above his head, and the cartoon caption reads, “In his early school days, little Mel Gibson gets beaten to a bloody pulp by Sister Dolorosa Excruciata of the Little Sisters of the Holy Agony, and an idea is born.”

Gee, I guess EVEYRONE takes offense at things!

Only the radicals are upset, which is nothing new. They only know hatred, intimidation, and living by the sword. Their religious stance is a perverted one derived from the gripping poverty of third world Islamic countries and their hatred of Israel. By proxy, the USA because we so staunchly support Israel.

A nice comparison is the right wing bigots in this country who pervert Christianity saying that it is a religion of the "pure white race"
They use violence as a scare tactic.

simply, when you reveal to a group of people (muslims) the truth about their origin, then they get mad and start hurting others because they don't want to admit it. The Pope gives muslims a chance to reveal their true negative feelings toward non-muslims. Did you notice that muslim countires aren't usually bothered when Iranian pres. threatens to destory Israel! Or when muslim extremists blow up or attempt to hurt civilians all over the world!
