There's three things my cockatiels love to do: Eat, shred and play with bells!

I often combine the different things into a game that they can play while I'm at the computer. Food is their favorite thing to maul. Especially if it's bread like muffins, multi grain loaves and even pancakes! Sometimes I'll string a few small slices of bread on a shoe string. They go nuts squealing over the best parts and swinging on near by perches to get the choosiest bits :-) . I do the same thing with Fruit Loops and Cheerios. I wear it as a necklace and the birds have something to maul while I'm busy reading or doing email. It's messy, so you may want to keep something close to you to sweep or vacuum it up. I find that saves any moles and scabs I might have around my neck as they're too busy exploring the edible toy than preening my poor cuts. Another thing you could do is take those plastic bird toy links and make a necklace out of them. The birds love to check those out when they're not in the mood to stay on their play stand and they're glued to your shoulder like a huge piece of bird poop ^.^ .

I also take the husks off corn on the cob. I dry them for 2-3 days and braid them up. My tiels' play perch is beside the computer so I will sometimes hang up a toy that they can destroy while there. Every so often I'll poke and bob it and they come rushing over. They don't like sharing with me ^.^ .

Many birds love it when you walk around the house or apartment and you point out the different things. I like to point out the different pets I have, and even point out characters when we're watching Movies. My guys are a huge fan of Waterworld and Logan's Run, LOL! They will answer the chirps of birds in songs I have on my computer. I plan on getting a CD of bird calls just for them :-) .

You can make a home made bell by using a plastic yogurt or pudding cup then stringing a plastic spoon or plastic key inside as a 'clapper'. My guys go nuts for them and will bang them around for a good hour. They may not know what the thing is for during the first while, but after they see you bang it about a few times they get the hint.

Other, more hands-on activities include showering with or even harnessing your bird and taking a walk around the block. You can make your own tiel harness by modifying a hamster harness. Make sure you test it indoors before bringing your guy outside. My guys love to be shown different places. When they're on the bus they have to see the people walk through the front door. If their view is blocked they'll strain those little necks as far as they'll go, LOL! I even bring them shopping with me, but I keep them in a small animal carrier. Most stores don't complain (or even notice!) if your bird is in a travel carrier. Restaurants do complain but I can understand considering they're worried about health regulations. When on harness, they MUST meet every person the see. Mindwipe is especially bad for that. I find my birds have a better personality when I bring them as little as once a month to a public place where they can see and meet new people. All the new faces help socialize them!

I hope that helps! Cockatiels are a great amount of fun!

Here are a few that I play with birds of all sizes:

1). The blanket game: bring your bird to a couch or bed and pull a blanket over the two of you, making a tent, so that the two of you have a little pocket to play in, just around your face. Act like you can't get out. Your tiel will go crazy trying to lead you out, like a hero. At the end of the game, part the cover a little so that some light gets in -- and as he follows it, praise him, then open it up, and tell him what a smart bird he is. They love it.

2). Peek-a-boo -- always a bird favorite. When you were a kid, did you ever wonder whether people could see you when you couldn't see them? Well, birds wonder that all the time. They love to listen to you call for them while hidden behind a corner, or even just behind your hand. It's also a teaching game: your bird learns how to do things that you can't see. It will eventually learn to play tiny little tricks on you.

3). Tricks training: you can teach your tiel everything from dancing to playing basketball, and all you need is a little repetition. The best games that you'll play with your tiel will be ones that he already shows you he's going to be good at.

I have a Timneh Grey who can dance. I teach him how to dance different ways by doing it around him all the time. I have a Congo Grey who is a little acrobat. I teach him how to combine certain moves into acrobatic tricks, by coaxing him into a position and repeating a word, until he does it when I say the word.
