"the House Administration Committee approved a bill to require states to ask for photo identification from voters by November 2008 and proof of citizenship by 2010. The full House could vote on it as early as next week."

I think it is long overdue.

You need ID for just about everything, these days. Why not for voting?

What do you think?

Ali, I think we pay enough taxes that if you don't have one getting one should be free.

Agree completely!! However, I know you will have people coming on here decrying the necessity and "expense" of having to come up with a photo ID. That's hogwash! It will go a long way to stopping people from voting who do not have the right to vote. It should be the responsibility of every citizen to get this required ID and it should NOT be considered a huge hardship. If there are people who really are on an extremely limited income, perhaps the cost of the card could be scaled according to income, such as for seniors and handicapped on limited income and even poor working families. Everyone validly on social assistance should get one issued to them, as well, at no cost. Anyone who does not have the ID by the deadline should not expect to be able to vote. The benefits far outweigh the inconvenience to American citizens!

You would have thought this would have been the law many years ago.I cant believe it took this long to do the right thing. Its only common sense but wait ,that is lacking in the government isn't it? I have to show a picture ID to get into my health club. You would think it would have been enacted as soon as the technology was available.I for one am ecstatic about it.

Yes, it is a good idea, however, how much will it cost each citizen to obtain this Voter's ID ? What if someone can not afford paying those fees? Are we trying to prevent certain class of citizens from voting? that would not be right. If no fees involved, then it a great idea.

The ID must be available at no cost, because charging for the ID is a violation of the 24th Amendment, which prohibits demanding payment of any money as a prerequisite for voting.

So, if the govt is going to mandate these IDs for voting, they must available to everyone at no cost.

Since old enough to wonder, it has puzzled this person how rich people do not set up multiple residency for trusted employees.
As one that does not drive would welcome way to get photo ID that was not as hard to get or cost as much as non-drivers photo ID. Think building fence is huge waste of money.

With all this phony ID stuff, we need something better than a simple ID or proof of citizenship. I still favor the retina scan.
