Based on the way the question was worded I am guessing you meant games to play in the car, not video games with cars in them....

Here is a list that should do you well (has always worked for me and mine) :)

Alphabet Game - You must find all the letters of the alphabet on signs and other locations outside your own vehicle IN ORDER... A to Z (we even throw in the 0 - 9 sometimes, but that is usually very easy to find)

License Plate "Bingo" - Point out the license plates from all the states (keep a list to on paper to make it an ongoing game, even make a "prize" for when you have all 50, like getting ice cream) getting all 50 is really hard to do :)

Car "Bingo" - At the beginning of the trip choose a car color and whoever has pointed out the most cars of that color by the end wins.

I went on a trip - It goes like this... 1st person says "I went on a trip and I brought...." Then you say something that starts with an A. The next person says "I went on a trip and I brought.... " the A item and then they add a B item... continue on in this manner until someone misses (they are then out and the rest of the group continues on) or until someone is able to recite all the items A - Z... this is a memory building exercise and great fun when you get silly

20 Questions - Think of something and the other player(s) have to figure it out by asking questions answerable with only a yes or no answer... and it must be figured out within 20 questions or the person with the item in mind wins.

I Spy - Choose something you can see as you're driving (preferably something you will be able to see for a long time) then you give 2 hints.... (example: I spy something fluffy and white... answer: a cloud) the guesser gets to guess what the object is. You can either set a limit on guesses or let them go with it until they either give up or get it.

Fun Car Songs -
The wheels on the bus/car - have fun making up new verses
B.I.N.G.O
Any other classics you can come up with, or you could even get a tape from your local library to build your repertoire with.

I also pack a "Travel Pack" - in it we keep a book to read (something he hasn't read yet and that will last up to 2 hrs, usually he doesn't last that long straight), a couple of coloring books and a small box of crayons or markers, a puzzle book of some sort (generally word searches), some "Mad Libs" fill ins, a deck of cards (you would be surprised at the solitaire games you can play in the car) we keep the Travel Pack in the car at all times and we change out the supplies as needed.
For semi-long trips we also pack snacks and drinks.

I do not like the gameboy idea now (I considered it hard for a very long time) because the bonding we get as a family while we pass the time is irreplaceable. If you DO decide to go with some sort of video game system I recommend the Leapster by Leapfrog... most of those games are fun AND educational (batman teaching times tables? whats better than that?)

Have fun and enjoy them while you can :)

Well defintley not i spy how about something like in know what you have to do is look at al the signs that are up then once you have got that word jumble it up and see how many words you can make out of it. Another game is spot the car. Let your son pick a color and then you pick a type of car and then see how many cars with the same discription you can find.

This is the last game i can think of and it is fab.
1 make a sentnce up
2 let your son make a senctence up which has something to do with the fist 1 eg

You: A man was walking a long a bridge
Son: And tripped over a duck
You the duck was very fat
Son: Because it ate to much bread

You ahve to make up random sentences to make it fun. Good Luck

The ABC game. Try to find each letter of the alphabet in order on different signs and call out the word so the other person knows they really saw it. The first to get to Z, wins. I have 4 kids and we play this all the time. We also do 20 questions. But the ABC game, I played when I was a little kid also.

Get the TV system put in the vehicle get the satellite service for the car and you wont have to worry about him being bored. Or buy a Ps2 with Grand Theft Auto San Andreas unedited Version and he'll be occupied till destination arrival

A very good car game is "shut the box". Small wooden dice game that has attached numbers to flip up and down, corresponding to numbers thrown on dice. Cheap Wal-Mart

Get him a Mad-Libs book to fill out. Boys get a kick out of filling in gross details to make a funny story. Have him read it back to you. Also, crosswords, Sudoku for kids, wordfinds. Bring water and crackers for car-sickness! (Sugar drinks & food increase nausea)

If you can afford it, get your kid a GAMEBOY and a couple games. If you don't have a lot of money, go to a Game shop and buy a USED one. There are lots of them out there. You won't be sorry.
