Anyone who doesn't think spaying or neutering their pets is mandatory should spend a day volunteering at their local animal shelter.
Breeders, you may be responsible breeders but the people you sell your animals to often are not and you need to face this fact if you truly care about the animals you are responsible for bringing into the world. There are tons of purebred animals in shelters or being abused and neglected in the homes you sold them to because many of these people look at the purebred dog as a status symbol and not a living breathing creature. When they tire of it or they don't give the animal proper attention and care, they often abandon it, dump it at a so called "no kill" shelter (where they may live in cages for months, even years or be recycled back again and again) or leave it in the yard neglected outside day and night. Look at all the purebred specific breed "rescue" organizations.
Also, many purebred animals have genetic health issues that people are not willling to pay to treat after they get the animal. Many people buying your popular breed of animals have no idea whether that breed is suitable for their lifestyles.
Help kids teach their parents to be responsible pet owners by giving them this story to read to their parents.

Truth of the matter is there are thousands of unwanted pets that end up in shelters daily and there are even more being born daily. Why would anyone want to live in a world where there are starving pets out there just because someone was uneducated on what needs to happen. Either we can kill the breeding factor in the dogs or we can kill the puppies when we are over ran by the billions....u decide....I think I will stick to spaying and neutering my pets...

As a breeder, I encourage my puppy people to spay & neuter. Leave breeding to experienced people who have done years of research about the breed and are trying to improve breed quality (as set fourth in the breed standard).
So what's happening is... Responsible breeders are breeding the best quality puppies. Responsible pet people are spaying and neutering their dogs. Irresponsible folks are indiscriminately breeding poor quality litters for profit. Unfortunately, there are times when I feel like the irresponsible folks are winning sometimes.

I think it's kind of sad that dogs may never get the chance to have puppies, but I'm all for spay and neuter because it's even more sad the number of animals that have no homes.

Always Spay/Neuter your pet otherwise if you get a male and female together you will wind up in a big mess.

I don't generally S/N mine, but then I have been showing/training dogs for 30 years and am responsible. For the people that are to lazy or stupid to manage their animals, they should have them altered.
MOST of the shelter dogs are crossbreeds. Why do people rant and rave about breeders when it is irresponsible ownership that is the cause of overpopulation? I make NO money on my puppies and place them with much thought. I am SICK and TIRED of being blamed for this when the cause of the problem is the stupid or lazy pet owners who let their dogs wander the streets making their own breeding decisions.
I think the irresponsible pet owners need to come to realize whats happening.

That's the most humane thing you can do for your pet. Look at how many animals are euthanized each year for no other reason than there aren't enough homes for them? It's so sad. Breeders, in my opinion, are so greedy trying to make money and adding to the problem. If someone pays and buys from a breeder, then that's one less chance an animal in a shelter has of finding a home. I think breeders add to the problem.

Every year 13-15 MILLION cats/dogs are euthanized(not all of them as humanely as we like to think). 25-30% of those are purebred animals. Think about it. Get your pets spayed/neutered. All six of our cats are spayed/neutered.

Oh my - thanks so much for asking that question! This is a huge issue! I am so for this. All out cats are spayed and neutered... and we don't have dogs. Just visit www.petfinder.com. Anyone would be shocked. I am also really glad that a trap/neuter/vaccinate/release program is starting in the US for feral cats. Something may be actually improving...
