I notice that if I hold control and click too many files to delete in windows it makes copies of the files I am trying to delete. What am I doing wrong?

I have lots of old files that I need to delete. How do I select more than one file to delete instead of deleting them one at a time? I would like to select many files in the same folder and then just delete them all at once.

You have done almost right.
To select multiple files alternatively in a folder,
1) select the first file by single-clicking on it.
2) Hold down the Ctlr Key, either left or right will do,
3) While the Ctrl Key is down, continue to select the remaining files by single-clicking on them.
4) After you have selected all the desired files, release the Ctrl Key, as well as don't hold down any keys on the mouse.
5) You can now press the Delete Key on the keyboard to have them deleted.

NOTE: if you are selecting a continous range of files, you can hold down the Shift Key. Try it to see the effect.

You must be dragging at the same time. Hold control, but click (with your mouse) on each individual file. Then let go of control after you have them all selected and hit the delete. Unless they are all in a row, then you can hold the shift key while selecting

If you have more to delete than you're going to keep, go up to EDIT > SELECT ALL........................................ then hold down CTRL as you click the files you want to keep, which deselects them................................. Then click EDIT > DELETE to delete the files.
