In his speech at the University of Regensburg on Tuesday, Benedict quoted criticism of Islam and the Prophet Mohammad by 14th century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus, who wrote that everything Mohammad brought was evil and inhuman, "such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

Exactly! I've been following the whole mess and it would be really funny if it weren't so damn sad.

The response to the pope's remarks in the Middle East have basically been as follows: "How dare you say Islam is a religion of violence? We will assassinate you and burn numerous churches for daring to utter this blasphemy!"

For what it's worth, I don't think the pope should apologize for remarks that he did not originate... especially since the Muslim response is proving those words to be at least partially true.

I am Muslim, and unfourntenely the middle east in going through the dark ages like Chritianity has. Islam is younger then Christinity so we are a little behind. But notice Western Muslims
didn't burn things. The Palestinies will be punished for burning places of worship. His statement wasn't correct, if he would have said: the middle east is NOt following the Prophet of its religion, it would have been true, but still there would have been riots. I am ashamed, and the some people in the Middle East make it very hard for us to teach or broadcast true Islam. I am embarrassed, and the riots were very hypoctical. NO ONE CAN FORCE SOMEONE TO BELIEVE IN WHAT THEY BELIEVE OR NOT SPEAK THEIR OPINION.
ITS HYPOCRITICAL, I NOW.

ASHAMED, FRUSTRATED, REAL MUSLIM

it is unfortunate how he read something from an older writing and it blew out of proportion. Muhammad PBUH never preached to spread religion by sword, he always taught peacful methods. Unfortunately some people express disagreements by violence and inappropriate remarks only, I hope this doesn't turn out to something similar to the danish cartoons, peace
