i think the only way to fix this is to get the silver off the back and have a new mirror cut to fit and place on the back. any suggestions on how to get the finish off or where in upstate ny to bring it to? it is an art deco mirror with blue glass panels on the side.

Think about the possibility of having it resilvered. This seems to be not a cheap process but if it is an old art deco mirror it might be worth it. Do a search for mirror resilvering.

You might be able to replace the existing mirror itself? May not be feasible. I doubt if putting a second mirror behind it would work very well.

You need to have the mirror resilvered

I found this resilverer located in NY, but don't know if it is near you, perhaps they can put you in contact with someone close to you.

Bear Glass is dedicated to the resilvering and restoration of antique mirrors. They can return most mirrors to their original clarity. If this is not possible they can cut new beveled mirror to order. They have been in business for years and also work with artists and glass fabricators to create custom applications.

You can scrape it off with a razor blade and then have a mirror cut the same size and put behind it, will look good as new.

Good luck
