Wow!!! You have gotten some ansewers from some world class idiots. Anyway, here's my 2 cents worth....We dropped the bomb on Japan to force them into capitulation in order to shorten the war and spare american lives (it is estimated that an invasion of Japan would have taken 1 million personel) However Japan is a centeralized nation state and terrorists are not. There is no "capital" of Al-quida. We do not have the luxery of forcing the enemy into an all or nothing engagment because their primary tactic is to remain scattered and force us to react to them. This tactic takes our Nucular arrsenal out of the equation. For all of America's history our military doctrine has been geared to face massed forces and this enemy denies us that, that is why you hear so much about this being "a new kind of war". (It really isn't, we used very much the same tactics on the British in the early part of our war for indepedence) Therefore having an arsenol of "scary weapons" is not the deciding factor. Nor is said arsenol that wich elevates us to superpower status in and of itself. Our ability to retain that status economicly is or far more signifigance. The task of the military in socio-political terms is to ensure that that ability is not hampered by forces hostile to us. The terrorists have chosen to become those forces (and if you think about it have been wildly unsuccessful to date--even 9/11 only distrubed our economy for about a month)
I hope this helps you

There is not, and never can be, a War on Terror. Terror is not a person or place so it cannot be killed, captured, or destroyed. It, therefor, cannot be the enemy in a war. Further, only Congress can declare war and it hasn't, Bush said years ago we had won in Iraq, so there is no war, our government has stated for the record that we are at peace. Japan is a country, in WW2 they were using military force to wage a war of aggression in the Pacific Theater. We used military force to beat them back and destroy their ability to continue the war, having accomplished this we made peace. The two are in no way similar. Politician like to use the word "war" because it makes a great sound bite, the "War on Poverty", the "War on Drugs", neither worked because there was neither a Nation or a People against whom to direct an attack. The "War on Terror" is unlikely to be any more success full, there will still be terror, just as there is still poverty and drugs. There's a saying that one definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over thinking that eventually you will get a different result, this is a perfect example.

Not sure you could call Pearl Harbor a terrorist act.
The Japanese government as a whole declared war on America. Most countries declare war because they feel it's whats best for their country and have political and military backing.
They also declare war as a last option.

Terrorist attack without any government, political or military backing,it is usually an act for personal reasons and done by small groups just to get attention and express their personal views.
They also declare war as a first option.

The war on terror is a glorified way of saying "We'll kick their asses before they kick ours!". Basically that's the plan and if they have bombs they are able to kick our ***. If we take their bombs away they have no tool for which to use. The US gaining superpower status is the conservative way of saying "Let's get in everyone else's business!". We go to other countries and spy on them to make sure they're not up to anything fishy. Think of it like someone reading your diary to make sure you haven't gotten your chastity belt broken. Got it? That's pretty much the plain explaination.
