i usually eat two 500 mg of those calcium pills daily. i know that women has more of a chance of getting osteoporosis, so i want to know if it's safe to give my 13-year old niece 2 of my calcium pills everyday, too (including the 2 cups of milk i give her to drink everyday).

No-she shiould still be drinking a quart of milk a day. She can decide for herself about pills later. She should have doctor's advice on them at her next check-up.

Please do not resort to Flintstone vitamins. Those things are pointless. They are so full of sugar and other preservatives that the body does not absorb any of the vitamin content. They are money down the drain.

In actuality a teens calcium needs are higher than that of an adult. A teen should be getting 1300mg/day vs. an adult who should get 1000mg/day. Teens have a higher vitamin and mineral need compared to people at most other stages of life. The three most important during this time are vitamin A, iron and CALCIUM! During puberty is when we accumulate half of our ultimate adult bone mass. If in adolescents you do not achieve sufficient bone density you have a greater risk of osteoporosis later in life.

Try to increase your nieces calcium intake through calcium rich foods. Have her limit or cut out soft drinks because those will inhibit absorption of calcium. And if you think it is necessary then YES, give her a supplement. It will do her no harm at all. But if her diet is sufficient in calcium then she may not need the supplement.

Your niece would be better off with drinking 1 quart of milk a day, also to eat a few slices of cheese, as both have all the calcium she needs and does not need to take pills to get it.

you don't want to overdose your niece on calcium so stay away from pills unless its suggested by a physician. if she eats well she should have no problem getting all the calcium she needs. foods like yogurt, cottage cheese, broccoli, spinach, and juices with added calcium should be plenty of help. if she just wont eat properly, try a multivitamin (even flinstones kids is rated for children and adults over 12)

Not without speaking to her doctor to address her dietary needs first. At her age, calcium is important, but it should come from foods before supplements.

at 13, you shouldn't give her more than one 500 mg pill. she'd be safer that way, and a child's body can only hold so much, the rest will be flushed (if she drinks enough water) just have her drink more milk a day
