Sometimes I get this overwhelming feeling that something bad happened to me when I was a kid. Do people actually suppress memories and completely forget them? If so, is it possible to release those memories? I really feel that something horribly bad happened.

Yes it is possible. The more traumatic, the harder the mind has to work to suppress it, but also sometimes the more urgently the mind has to suppress it so you can function.

You might need to talk to a therapist about this.

Yes, it is possible to suppress memories and completely forget them.

It is common for children to suppress traumatic memories, but it happens to adults too.

Have a look at the google page here:

Be VERY CAREFUL if you choose to see a hypnotist. There are issues with "implanted memories" where a patient goes to see a therapist (esp hypnotists) and they actually have memories suggested to them or implanted in them.

Yes, it really is possible. I remembered a few traumatic moments from my childhood and thought I was "over it" until one day in my mid 20's I began having flashbacks and memories of things I had completely forgotten. Many of the flashbacks were verifiable with family members so I know they were real. If you are trying to remember suppressed events you might benefit from the Dreamer's Herbal tea at the website below. It helps with dream recollection and lucid dreaming. Use caution though if you have a drug test coming up. I checked with the herbalist that makes this tea and she said there is a remote possibility that the mugwort herb in it can cause a false positive on a drug test if the tea is consumed within a few hours of a test.

It probably did, but it's a natural function developed to protect you - there's nothing unnatural about it at all, although it can express itself in unconscious ways.

The mind doesn't want to have to cope with a bad memory over and over again, and it can't just press a button and say 'delete'. Most people have some disturbing experiences in their childhood and still grow up to be healthy people. Of course the earlier 'it' happens the more affected you'll be, because it plays right into the developing stage of your life - when you're older, you're more 'numb'.

edit: the best way of dealing with any suppressed memory is to deal with it in your own sweet time. Anything anybody else says doesn't matter. It's your past, and it's up to you if you want to poke the stone and watch the spider scuttle off.

Yes its possible. I think its called a "coping mechanism". To bring these memories back to light would require a trained therapist (psychiatrist, psychologist, etc.) and may require hypnosis. Keep in mind that if there is blocked trauma from your past and you unleash these memories they will never be suppressed again. This suppression of memories, if you do have it, may be a blessing. Think hard and get professional advise about the wisdom of doing this.

people do not intentionally suppress traumatic events, it is a naturally occurring protective method when something so severe happens to us and we can't deal with it at the time. Talk to your family or those close to you about your feelings and try to get some feed-back, also if that doesn't work ,talk to a counselor

Yes they do and something usually always triggers these supressed feelings or memories or you may even experience bits and pieces of flashbacks.

See a hynotherapist who will be able to see if anything traumatic has caused the feeling you have mentioned.
