they bite . they have a needle like mouth piece called a proboscis as they enter into your skin they inject an anesthetic to numb the area. Then they suck your blood. Only the females bite. males have other food sorces.

really they are what you call "piercing and sucking" insects. they have a needle-like proboscis which functions like a straw so that they can suck blood. so technically, "mosquito bite" is just a catchy phrase
