Oh no, surely you're wrong.
A mystical being created the world in 7 days (well 6, he needed a KitKat) and then periodically pops up to tell people things. He also wrote a book - full of contradictions but you can forgive an all powerful being for a few mistakes, can't you?
Oh, he had a kid too - the fool got himself crucified though and you are saying this is fiction???? Shame on you.

Ok, so the poor and the slaves who were the first Christians, suffering persecution, torture and execution were the rich and powerful of their world? Sounds like we need to rewrite the history books.

Read the New Testament, especially Atcs, some time. Christianity was not founded or supported by the "rich and powerful". And its early leaders (such as Jesus, the apostles, and Paul) never achieved riches, power or control of the masses in their lifetimes. In fact Peter and several of the other disciples left their own businesses to become disciples, walking away from riches. Paul was a powerful leader amoung the Jews before he converted and gave it all up for Christ. Paul even refused to even accept pay for his teaching ministry, insisting on working a job to support himself.

Has religion been used by some of the rich and powerful to control people? Sure. But so have money, economics, property, medicine, laws, freedoms, patriotism, and more. But that does not make any of those in and of themselves false or evil. Nor does it do the same to religion.

This is sort of true. The rich and powerful needed a mechanism to control the masses and saw that most sheeple (people sheep) had some innate fear of a supreme being, hence religion was born. They also use drugs and terrorism for this purpose. God is nothing but a pawn.

And where do you get such valuable information, from some writer who wishes to control you to thwart others from their beliefs, get a grip. God created true worship and had the Bible penned by men he chose to inspire through the Holy spirit, since you have no faith in God he will not reveal anything to you, you possibly cannot understand. mandm; Jesus did not start the Catholic religion and Peter was not the first pope, where do you come up with this trash. And mike how do you explain communism which ruled a large chunk of the world and they were atheists. So we see that really you have to watch out for the Atheists, they want to control the world.

I would say that in countries like the UK, religion is no longer used to control people en masse, but from my personal experience of countries like Saudi Arabia, I can see that religion is used to control and manipulate the people.

"Religion is the opiate of the masses." --Karl Marx

Marx came to the same conclusion. He saw religion as a way of keeping the lower classes content so that they would not rebel against their horrible condition, created by a rich upper class. The French and Bolshevik revolutions showed what happens when the masses finally rebel.

This is not to say that I am implying that anyone who thinks you or Marx has a point is a communist (I'd have to chuck the first stone at myself, after all).

You make no sense.

But if you're trying to ask if religion was invented by the rich and powerful as a way to control the masses by fear, then the answer is Yes.

It seems like you have it all figured out. I think the purpose of religion is to convey a sense of well being to all and to instill upon all the need to practice goodwill to one another as well as to allow us to know the difference between right and wrong.

I don't know where you got your information, but Jesus came to earth, born in a manger and was very poor. He started the Catholic religion by appointing Peter as the first Pope and sent his apostles to go and preach to all nations. They were not rich nor powerful. They preached the Ten Commandments and the Word of God. Read the Bible and you will find out all about religion and how to live your life.

Not in the absence of the leader. Most religions are created to serve the leader (if you prefer the gigantic mind-controlling conspiricy religious mindest)
