America only opposes terrorists it doesn't like.
In the 1970s,80s and 90s when the UK was being attacked by the IRA, civilians were being bombed and british soldiers and policemen were being shot in the street, the main source of support for the IRA was america, especially New York and Boston where you could see posters in catholic churches in support of the IRA and collecting boxes for donations.
The St. Patricks day parade in New York was a major fund raising event for them.
Their weapon of choice was the american Armalite rifle and they would go to america for training.
If an IRA gunman was on the run from the british authorities he knew he would be safe if he could get to the USA.
All of this was common knowledge in both countries and yet succesive american governments did nothing to stamp it out.
So when 9/11 happened there was an interest in the UK as to whether the americans would continue to support the terrorist IRA especially as it was their heartland of New York that had been hit.
The answer to that was obvious when the IRA ceased their violence. So it would seem that 9/11 had a practical benefit for the citizens of the UK.

We were participating a whole lot in the Cold war. in the Iran contra affairs where we sold guns and stuff to the Iranians... and then we were there aiding the Mujahaddin in Afghanistan when the Soviets took over. This was the early 80s and then we were also tehre in Saudi Arabia in the Gulf War. This really got Bin Laden pissed off at us... beacuse we stationed our marines in their holy land, and we didn't get out in time, otherwise it wasn't that big of a problem. But yeah, we were also there since Israel has been there, our help has gone out Israel and that has created conflicts with neighboring countries and us. so yeah. since the 50's i guess.

since the time we begain this country. the widest agreement on the term terrorism is military actions targeted to an unarmed civilian population. so techinically using that the native americans did terrorist actions agains settlers in the 1800's. if you are talking about the "islamic type terrorist" (yeah i know not all muslims are terrorist) the Marines were fighting the barbary pirates in the 1700's where the line "to the shores of Tripoli" comes from in the Marine Corp Hymn.

Since time began. Terrorism comes in all shapes and sizes. You don't have to live in Iraq or Afganistan to cause fear or terror.
Hitler caused much fear and terror.
So did Nero. So did Saddam Hussein. So did Muammar Gadaffi. They may have not all been called terrorists or even though of that way. But if you walk the walk and talk the talk..

We have been fighting them since the 1700's. Pirates that stole, hijacked and held hostages for ransom were Muslims. We were making ransom payments to them until President George Washington stopped it and built the first warship, the Constitution.

This is a trick question. The war has been in progress for longer than nearly anyone will admit. Some will argue that we haven't started actually fighting it yet. You need to define you terms better to get a good answer.

I have been in the Air Force for over 15 years and we have been getting briefings about terrorism ever since I enlisted. The problem is that Clinton never wanted to really do anything about it.

I would say America has been fighting for five years...before 911...and quite honestly even now...we really arent fighting...we care more causing irritating battles to occur in the middle east instead of here in the US. I would prefer we would just fight and win instead of this weak strategy that will never produce meaningful results

The present war started when Iran took the hostages in 1979,
the whole islamist thing actually started back in the thirties in Egypt with the Muslim brotherhood.
