Defineately spay the dog. It does prevent uterine cancer as well as mammory cancer. The personality change is a good thing she will not be nearly as hyper, will get along better with other dogs and will not be nearly as tempermental. Spaying also increases life span, overall health and quality of life for the dog and you. You don't want to deal with a heat cycle it is a BIG mess and you will have male dogs lining up outside your door. If you've ever been to an animal shelter you will see why spaying and neutering is such a big deal. So many animals die daily because someone didn't fix their pet.

I am going to guess by your question that you have never had a dog that was in heat.
yes, there is a higher risk of cancer simply because if you spay you dog then she will have one less organ to become cancerous. but the bigger problem that arises when you have a female dog that is in heat, especially a chihuahua is that they can get pregnant. every male dog for miles around will smell her and come running. males of all different sizes. if there is a great dane in smelling distance he will come and you can imagine how big those puppies would be, that birth could seriously injure of even kill her. also, she will be miserable. if you are planning to breed her than that's a different story, but usually not a good idea for someone who is not a professional. I have several small dogs and they are all fixed. it really is a good idea. she will be uncomfortable for a few days and then she'll be fine. if she's not fixed she'll be miserable and howling every six months for the rest of her life.

Hmm... I'm not sure about the cancer, but my opinion is that you should spay your dog. There are also other risks of not spaying such as the chance of your dog running away during heat. Your best bet is to ask the vet the down side of spaying or not. I hope that helps you! Good luck with your new friend!

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! spay her!!!!! it won't change her personality at all. your bf's dog may have had a problem with this because of not doing it early enough. if you spay your dog before her first heat, hormones will not have a chance to change her from what she is right now. also, YES she can get cancer. ovarian, uterine, cervical cancer. any of the above, and by spaying her, you will run ZERO chance of that happening to your sweet little pooch. not to mention you will not have a mess every time she goes into heat, won't have to fight her instinctive urges to run away to find a mate, and potentially have puppies that something that small could not have without dying from it if she was accidentally bred by anything other than another chihuahua.

It would be better if you got her spayed, regardless of cancer - although I'm sure it would reduce that risk as well. It's just so much better for you, even, to have her spayed, so then you wouldn't have to worry about unwanted puppies. Personally, I think it's better in the long run. You never know what will happen later down the road.

Unless you plan on breeding her you should definalty get her spayed. No only are unspayed/unneutered pets at higher risk of cancer you also have to deal with all the mess when she goes into heat and other dogs coming around trying to get to her. She can also have a tendency to develope ovarian tumors and the risk will get greater each time she goes into heat. Not all pets have a personality change when they are fixed. The reason most males tend to is because once they are fixed they are fixated with wanted to mate therefore they are at calmer states of mind. And at your dogs young age it probablly won't have much effect on her personality wise anyway.

I don't know about Cancer, but I do know that there are WAYYY too many animals in the shelters and that spaying is a good thing. Spaying or Neutering a dog is a good thing always. Good luck with your new family member!! :)

Get her spayed. Unless you plan on breeding her (and there is no money to be made because you end up spending more than you'll make), there is no reason to keep her intact. Not only is there a high risk for uterine and ovarian cancer, but there is also a very high risk for pyometra(a uterine infection that can kill an animal very quickley).

YES-definitely get her spayed. I had to take my pit to emergency bcuz she got a uterus infection. There was almost a gallon of pus surrounding her uterus. It would've been prevented if I got her spayed.
So ADD YEARS TO HER LIFE AND MONEY IN YOUR WALLET and get her spayed.
