Most people in the US had family members that came to the US from other countries and came through legally at Ellis Island. I hear this argument a lot from people who think we should "sent the Mexicans back to where they came from." So my question is, if we set up something similar to Ellis Island at the Mexican boarder, would that be a good way for Mexicans to immigrate legally?

Edit: This question isnt about whether we should "send them back" or not. It is whether people agree or oppose the idea of an Ellis Island type set up at the boarder.

Wait your thinking rationally.......:). I like the idea but if they are documented then they would have to be paid fair wages and get safe working conditions and that would just cost too much.

The real problem here is that Mexico seems to be falling apart,
and it'll continue to fall apart unless the citizens OF that country decide to turn it around. Legal immigration, sure, but not 12 million people. This isn't a Rolling Stones concert, it's our national future we're talking about, here. Mexico still needs to fix Mexico, there's no way around it, emigrating wholesale to the United States is not a magic panacea for decades of dysfunction in Mexico. Mexico has a future, but whether that future turns out to be positive or negative depends entirely on whether people decide to stick with it and build it, or flee the scene of the crime and bolt for the United States.
What Mexico should be trying to do these days is sell its' citizens on the idea of doing just that, staying and fixing their problems, instead of running for the hills in the face of adversity.
Building the border fence and ending illegal immigration will maximize Mexico's opportunity to excel in this area. It will also eliminate the undue burden inflicted on american communities that have manifested problems as a result of uncontrolled and illegal immigration.
Instead of trying to 'game' the american immigration process,
why not work on ways to fix your own country? It's decades overdue...

We already have that. It's called California! And, you might not like to hear this but tuff - they will come illegally anyway! They suffer no consequences. It's not like they sailed the Atlantic Ocean to get here, and their government encourages it because they have better things to do than help their own people. Do you know what Mexico does with illegal aliens in THEIR country? We should do worse, because we embrace the Mexican people, but the illegals are usually law breakers in their own country. And they dry up our resources without paying taxes. I for one, am not willing to support illegal aliens, when they can go about the process (which is in PLACE FOR A GOOD REASON!) legally.

If Congress passes a law to allow what you say then it would be legal. However, right now it is illegal to break into this country and work without government permission and the punishment under the law for doing so is deportation. Nobody is above the law and people that want it ignored should be ashamed of themselves.

First of all if you are going to ask a question, know how to ask it ok!!! Not all people in the USA are MEXICANS OK!!! Not all the people that cross the Mexican border are MEXICANS therefore not all of them are MEXICANS!! Please call them HISPANICS!!!! And about your question, i think that wouldn't work, since its just too much people who wants to immigrate to the USA

The reason I think that we should "send the Mexicans back to where they came from." is because of this:
(1st Qtr) INS/FBI Statistical Report on Undocumented Immigration.
Work Paid Under the Table - No Taxes
> 62% of all "undocumented immigrants" (illegal aliens) in the United States are working for cash and not paying taxes;
> Those working illegal aliens who are paying taxes are doing so by use of stolen social security numbers, a felony.
Crime
> 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens;
> 83% of warrants for murder in Phoenix are for illegal aliens;
> 86% of warrants for murder in Albuquerque are for illegal aliens;
> 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Albuquerque are illegal aliens;
> 24.9% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally;
> 40.1% of all inmates in Arizona detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally;
> 48.2% of all inmates in New Mexico detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally;
> 29% (630,000) convicted illegal alien felons fill our state and federal prisons at a cost of $1.6 billion annually;
> More than 53% of all investigated burglaries reported in California, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and Texas are perpetrated by illegal aliens;
> More than half of all gang members in Los Angeles are illegal aliens from south of the border;
Car Thefts/ Traffic Violations
> More than 71% of all apprehended cars stolen in 2005 in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California were stolen by illegal aliens or transport coyotes";
> 47% of cited/stopped drivers in California have no license, no insurance and no registration for the vehicle. Of that 47%, 92% are illegal aliens;
> 63% of cited/stopped drivers in Arizona have no license, no insurance and no registration for the vehicle. Of that 63%, 97% are illegal aliens;
> 66% of cited/stopped drivers in New Mexico have no license, no insurance and no registration for the vehicle. Of that 66%, 98% are illegal aliens;
The Cost of Health Benefits
> More than 380,000 "anchor babies" were born in the United States in 2005 were to parents who are illegal aliens; making those 380,000 babies automatically U.S. citizens. 97.2% of all costs concurred from those births were paid by the American taxpayer;
> More than 66% of all births in California are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal whose births were paid for by taxpayers;
The Cost of Welfare
> More than 43% of all Food Stamps issued are to illegal aliens;
> More than 41% of all unemployment checks issued in the United States are to illegal aliens;
> 58% of all Welfare payments in the United States are issued to illegal aliens;
> Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties in the United States are illegal aliens;
> More than 300,000 illegal aliens in Los Angeles County are living in garages.

> More than 24% of Arizona students in grades 1-12 are non-English-speaking;
> More than 39% of California students in grades 1-12 are illegal aliens;
More than 42% of California students in grades 1-12 are non-English-speaking. In Los Angeles County, 5.1 million people speak English. 3.9 million speak Spanish;
Costs to American Tax Payers
> The cost of immigration to the American taxpayer in 1997 was a NET (after subtracting taxes immigrants pay) $70 BILLION a year, [Professor Donald Huddle, Rice University];
> The lifetime fiscal impact (taxes paid minus services used) for the average adult Mexican ILLEGAL alien is $55,000.00 cost to the American taxpayer in a 5-year
