i am having a hard time deciding what color my highlights should be...since my hair is pretty dark black, i don't want to get blonde highlights because they just wouldn't look right on me. i have a tan complexion, not totally white. and if it helps, i've got medium length hair with recently cut side bangs. any ideas?

no, blonde wouldn't look right, you have a point there. what might look good are subtle coppery tones or, if you're courageous, blue.

Being A cosmo, first of all bleach will have to be used in your hair to start with the highlights. If you were in my chair looking for advice, I would recommend a 5RV or 6RV (matrix colors) which are a deep Red Violet. I belive it would look AWESOME for highlights and they aren't way too dramatic so they will grow out nicely and you will have more time in between touch ups. I would also recommend getting a DEMI permanent color (lthey say lasts 6-8 weeks, but with my expierence lasts just as long as permanent needing a touch up) which is better for your hair because it contains NO ammonia. I wish you good luck :) this color is HOT now!

Arg. Don't do it. I was tempted. And got light brown (caramel-ish). It looks rediculious. Especially since I decided to let them grow out. Now I have half a head of black hair, and half a head of nasty-lookin' crap. And the lady at the hair place did a horrible job, it's been a year. She told me they'd fade out. But it damaged it worse.

You should get something that's not gonna look stupid while it's growing out. Something natural. Maybe a really dark brown, or a dark reddish brown. That would probably look good.

Glad to help!

I think you should try some red highlights, I've seen many girls with black hair and red highlights and think it looks great. Dont get a bright red!!

I just got side bangs today, but I have blonde hair (very light.) but
I think a nice Caramel would look cute with black hair.

i would go for medium brown honey colored highlights, or else red (but not like, stop light red, like, nice copperish red). yeah, blonde highlights on black hair looks really skunkish and gross. just go with whatever color you think will look best on you and be happy with it! it's just hair, you can always change it!

Black hair is so pretty, why highlight it? Most people i see with black have redish highlights, but discuss it with your stylist...she would most likely know best.

I agree with Crystal. <3
But if it does go wrong, you can try one of those gentle temporary dyes in your current color. As it washes out of the highlights, it may look better, or you can re-dye, because by then it may be 4 weeks already.

I have dark hair too. I went to a good hair salon for a consultation, and they suggested a brown that would compliment my colour. Good luck!
