I used to think they deducted 20%. My friend says 20%. Now I'm wondering if it is closer to 10%.

Depends if you are married, single, dependents, etc. Approx. 20 - 27% would be about average.

Depends on where you live and how much you are paid so it's not possible to give you a meaningful estimate unless you tell us. Low wage earners may pay a smaller % in income tax. Very high wages call for a higher %. Then it depends on the # of deductions you put down on your W-2. If your state has an income tax (a few states don't), figure that in. The state rate varies from state to state. Then there's social security tax and medicare tax.

Oh, lordy, I did that a couple of years ago, when I was a legal secretary and doing moderately well for that field. I was paying, including all the secondary things like forced insurance premiums and so on, over $200 a week in deductions! And that for a salary that was merely middle-class. Imagine what the guys going over the hill in the early dawn to silicon valley, who take that trip in their BMWs and their Porsches, singing along with the radio, no doubt, just think what they must be paying in taxes. Just for the privilege of working.
But now I'm retired, have been for three days now, and the world looks different from here. Now I get to do what suits me, and I'm opening a bookstore. Been a dream all my life.

Ya know, I never know when I am on here, where people are from, but apparently you are not from USA. Why aren't you people a little more explicit about your questions? In USA we do not have a straight-across-the-board tax. It is by wealth and poverty, at varying percentages. Apparently our congresspersons and Representatives in the liberati parti have nuttin better to do than figger out more rules for taxes. A new book comes out very month with a googol of new laws. HA! And they are our 'civil' servants, gettin paid with our taxes! Talk about heinous crimes! hahahhahahahahhahahaha I lmao all the way to the poor house.
