In southern Cali you've got to have different ethnic areas and if you find a jewish community, you can probably find some good pickles. I live in AZ now and we don't have that here so, I've had to resort to the things they carry in the grocery store ( which isn't much to choose from ) but, I've found that Vlasic original dills are the closest I can get here. Their pretty good but, definitely not an original sour pickle. but, their pretty sour ( for store bought )
Sorry, I couldn't help too much but, I was trying to give you an idea of something that will do in a pinch.

I would go to a deli and see if they have Sour Pickles

Go to any fish market (where they fry fish). They sell really sour pickles.
