I'm just curious what the rest of Californians thought.

To Satanist: Really? Arnold signed the bill recently. It was sometime last week and I caught it on the local news. I thought to myself, "It's about time that driver's get a hands free for their cell." First violation is a $20 fine, second fine will be a $50 fine.

Even if the Bill doesn't get effective until the year 2008, I'm still happy that Arnold signed this bill either way. I have been using my hands free for the last 7 yrs and it's been helpful only when I need to make an emergency call out while driving. Anyways, I see that everyone has an opinion and that's good.

I live in Cali and would have appreciated the bill had it actually gone into effect now! Instead, it won't go into effect until 2008. What does that say to me? It says that Schwartzineger has tried to butter both sides by hoping to please the people who want the law changed, and by putting off the actual date it goes into effect by 2 years, it gives all the whiners time to forget about it.

Good for Arnold! Statistics have shown that cell phone users are more dangerous drivers than drunks.
On Friday afternoons, during rush hour in Los Angeles, about one in five drivers is thought to be legally intoxicated. How much worse can you get than a drunk Californian using a cell phone while driving?

It will be followed by the new law banning conversations between the driver and a passenger because that tends to distract the driver. There will also be a law banning fast food drive-throughs because studies have shown that eating while in the car is a distraction of driving as bad as talking on a cell phone. since it is CA there will be an unlimited set of follow-on laws until it becomes easier to just walk.

It's completely pointless and redundant.

There are already laws on the books for driving while distracted, and laws punishing anyone who gets into an accident.

All this law does is prohibit a specific behavior, already prohibited where it is problem, because that makes it easier for police to enforce than the general law. So, the government bans one more thing, because it can't be bothered to enforce the existing laws.

I don't much care for drivers using cell phones. As a matter of fact I have a sticker on my car that reads " Shut up & Drive".
What I really really don't like is seeing a woman driver applying
her makeup while driving.

Well, It's an excellent law. Now we just have to get ALL Californians to abide by that law. Nearly impossible if you ask me. People here really don't like to mind the rules. But, as for me...I never talk and drive. :)

well, it doesnt start till 2008 and i think they're gonna have a hard time enforcing it. It will be a hassle at places like the airport! I have enough trouble finding my ride.

Next time I am stuck behind an idiot weaving all over the road or going super slow because they are dialing on their cell, I'll hopefully seem them get pulled over. Then I will laugh my @ss off!.......
