I am not a mormon,however I am going to church with a friend that is a mormon tomorrow. I am a little nervous because I have not been to a church in a couple of years,other than for holidays. I am not exactly sure what to expect. Is it like a catholic church? I have heard that is very social and it gives people a chance to communicate with other people. Is this true and can someone give me some insight about the mormon churches? Thanks in advance.

At a Mormon church, the people dress rather formally ... the men all wear shirts and ties or suits. A Mormon church lasts 3 hours and has three parts to it (one each hour). The first part is where they sing hymns, pray, take communion (which they do with bread and water -- not wine, because Mormons are against consuming any kind of alcohol) and listen to lessons from members of the church on topics related to their faith ... except on one sunday a week when rather than having the lessons they let the people give their testimonies ... where they usually say somehting like "I love Joseph Smith, and I'm so thankful that we have a Prophet on earth today in Gordon B. Hinckley, I love Jesus Christ and I know in my heart that the Church is true"

Then in the second part, they have "sunday school" Basically you go to a classroom and someone will teach you about a Mormon belief.

Then in the last hour, men and women split off and go to the Priesthood meeting (for men) and the Relief Society meeting (for women). I've never been to a Relief Society meeting, obviously, but if anything like the Priesthood meeting it probably just teaches you how to be a better woman.

Sometimes, they have a lunch afterwords where people can socialize.

A lot of people on this site like to try to tell people what Mormons believe. You can judge what Mormons believe much better at a Mormon church and by talking to Mormons. Don't believe all the misrepresentations you hear about the church. Don't worry about being nervous, people are very nice at church. We respect people's beliefs. Nobody will come over and try to convert you unless you want them to.

Church is three hours long. The first hour is sacrament meeting. This is where we take the sacrament and talks are given to the congregation. The speakers are members of the church and there are different speakers every week. Hymns are also sung. There are two different classes after this where you learn about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

You will have chances at church to socialize with other people. I hope you enjoy your experience and visit again.

Church is 3 hours long, The first hour and 15 minutes is called Sacrament. That's where the bread and water is taken in memory of Jesus dying on the cross for us. There are talks given by members of the church on a variety of subjects. We have a Bishhop but he doesn't give a sermon or anything like that, the people are asked to talk and are given topics on which to talk about. The next 50 minutes is Sunday School there are a few different classes to go to depending on your age. There are classes for teenagers, adults, children, etc. The last 50 minutes there is another class once again depending on your age.

Mormon church is more business-like. There is a ceremony that last about an hour. Then there are classes. One with men and women together. The other is separate.

You'll notice that they dress very well (or as well as they have to wear.) The nice thing is that they don't look down on you for wearing shorts and flip-flops (if that's all you've got.)

The members will go out of their way to shake your hand and greet you.

By the way...you are not expected to take communion (nor should you.) That is something that only members in good standing will do.

Before you go and join ask about Kolab. Ask questions and be critical of all their answers. You owe it to your soul.

The Mormons are good people, but be wary. I personally believe they are misled.

Don't ask where the coffee is either. (Joke)

I have lived around Mormons all my life, even had Mormon sweetie at one time, and I never met one I did not like. I have no truck with their religion but find it interesting. Not enough to join but just to know about. Just be yourself and the visit will work out just fine. I have been there and it worked out for me, unfortunately the relationship did not. More is the pity, it was a hot time for me.

The vast majority of Christian denominations in the United States, does not regard the Mormon church as a Christian church. That is because the official writings of Mormonism deny fundamental teachings of orthodox Christianity. For example, the Nicene Creed confesses the clear biblical truth that Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Trinity, is "of one substance with the Father." This central article of the Christian faith is expressly rejected by Mormon teaching -- thus undermining the very heart of the scriptural Gospel itself. In a chapter titled "Jesus Christ, the Son of God: Are Mormons Christian?" the president of Brigham Young University (Rex Lee, What Do Mormons Believe? [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1992] summarizes Mormon teaching by stating that the three persons of the Trinity are "not... one being" (21), but are "separate individuals." In addition, the Father is regarded as having a body "of flesh and bone" (22). Such teaching is contrary to the Holy Scriptures, destructive to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and indicative of the fact that Mormon teaching is not Christian.

I would research it more and talk to family members, and others of different faiths, and/or a priest, a minister, a rabbi.
It is not like a Catholic Mass.
I know my daughter couldn't go to a Mormon wedding. They have certain rules as to who can enter their temples.
Also try going to other churches, catholic, protestant, etc. Read the Bible, or other religious books so you know what direction to take.

Mormons are not christian. Have a look at their OWN teachings

DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/contents
93:29 Man was also in the beginning with God. Intelligence, or the light of truth, was not created or made, neither indeed can be.

it seems that man is NOT a created being in LDS Teachings

33 For man is spirit. The elements are eternal, and spirit and element, inseparably connected, receive a fulness of joy;

It seems that God DID NOT created everything in LDS teachings

D&C 131:7 There is no such thing as immaterial matter. All spirit is matter, but it is more fine or pure, and can only be discerned by purer eyes;
8 We cannot see it; but when our bodies are purified we shall see that it is all matter.

So according to LDS teaching God did NOT create the world ex nihilo rather, God had materials to organizethe world out of chaos--chaotic matter. The elements had an existence from the time God had.

What does the word of God say.
NIV
1Ti 4:16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
2Ti 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
1Co 4:6 Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not take pride in one man over against another.
