I'm about to cook some yams for dinner but the only way I know of is to mash it with brown sugar to make it "candied'. I don't feel for anything sweet... so I'm thinking to mash it with butter like mashed potatoes. Will that taste good?

Anyone have any suggestions on something simple to do with these yams? Thanks in advance.

i like to bake my yams like a regular potato and serve them with butter and cinnamon sugar, its a lot less sweet than candied yams and much healthier.

or you can try these nifty recipes...

recipe for chille butter for baked sweet potatos:
2tbs olive oil
2 lg poblano chiles coarsely chopped
1 cup packed cilantro leaves
2 large green spring onions
3 large cloves garlic, chopped
2 green jalapeno chiles chopped
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 cup unsalted butter
2 tsp lime juice
salt and pepper

heat olive oil in a pan over high heat and add the poblano chiles and saute until tender crisp (about 5 minutes) transfer the chiles to a bowl and let cool completely. combine the cilantro, onion, garlic, halapeno, oregano, salt and pepper and blend (preferably in a food processor) until finely chopped. add the butter and lime juice and process until just blended. add the pblano chiles and blend until the chiles are finely chopped. put it on your potato :)

a way of making mashed sweet potatos (that is still less sweet than candied and one of my favorites):

6 small yams
4 tbsp butter
3tbsp sugar
3 tbsp light unsulfered molasses
3 tbsp bourbon (optional)
salt and peper to taste
1/8 tsp allspice
1/8 tsp nutmeg

bake the potatos for about 45 min at 400F... cut them lengthwise and scoop out the flesh into a large sauce pan and discard the skins. add the butter, sugar, molasses, bourbon, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. mash until smooth and rewarm over low heat stirring often for 5 minutes.

the mashed potatos are awesome with fried chicken, chicken fried steak, or blackened catfish fillets

There are so many great things you can do with sweets, AKA Yams. If I were going to mash them, I would boil them in a pot for about an hour. Let them cool, peel the skins and then mash them with some butter and enough light cream to taste. Brown sugar and or cinnamon and nutmeg can be added if you choose to, I like them less sweetened. Something that has become my signature sweet potato recipe is a bake made with: 4 granny smith apples peeled and sliced and mixed into a casserole dish with slightly boiled and peeled sweet potatoes. The dish should be sprayed with a non stick spray and the apples and potatoes should be tossed with brown sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, Karo syrup and a few pats of butter. Bake the mix in the prepared casserole dish until bubbling and browned. You can also use raisins, I don't know measurements, I eye it. My family loves it and when I am invited elsewhere I bring it and I am always happy about how much everyone gets to enjoy it. It's just a very seasonal dish as well, fresh apples, the orange potato,....................BIG HIT. Email me if I can help in any way.

They are great just done like a baked potato for sure. They are usually pretty sweet right now so you wouldn't have to add sugar. At this point you could mash them too. You can also cube them and toss with olive oil, salt and pepper. Bake on a cookie sheet at 400 for about 20-30 min until tender. Hope this helps. enjoy!!!

Loved yams to the bone before adapting a raw vegan lifestyle. So we peel them and cut them up into 2" pieces and boil in water with garlic, onions and seasioning peppers for about 15 minutes . Just cover them so they cook nicely. After 15 minutes add a can of cocomut milk to the water and let them boil down all the way adding minced chives as well. Salt the pot when the coconut milk goes in.

Delicious creole vibes going on.

Yes, cook yams in microwave until soft. Skin will easily be removed. Mash with butter. A little milk is optional. It is really delicious.

Yams can be used about anyway you normally cook potatoes. They're good mashed, fried, baked or even french fried.

Baked yams are very good. Just wash them, slice an "x" in one side of the yam, place them in the oven and bake for 45 minutes to an hour. They are excellent with butter and cinnamon. Enjoy

You could just bake them like baking potatoes. I'd say wrap them in aluminum foil and bake in a 400 degree oven for about an hour. With a little butter and salt they'd be great.

I much prefer them prepared like mashed potatoes.

Boil, mash with a bit of milk and butter to taste, serve with salt and pepper.

If you insist on sweetening them, mash with a little unsulphured molasses and butter.

Delicious and nutricious.
