The statement "any dog would do" is a major reason that people give up their pets, because frankly, just any dog will NOT do. The most common mistake that people make in getting a dog, especially for their children, is in not researching breed traits and determining exactly how well the dog will fit into the family and it's lifestyle. There are millions of dogs in shelters and rescue homes nationwide because people chose a dog that didn't meet their requirements. My Basset hound is a rescue from such a home, and her story is heartbreaking. It wasn't necessary for her to go through what she did because the people chose the cutest puppy, with no idea of what the breed is like, or requires.

I'd urge you to please use both a breed selector, then a breed traits list in choosing your pet. Breed selectors ask specific questions about your family, home, time constraints, budget, preferences, et cetera, and will pick a number of appropriate breeds for you according to your answers. You then use a breeds traits list to learn more about each animal and make an informed decision on what dog will be the best fit for you and your children. There are many small dogs that are good with children, and many others that should probably not be around them, and you really need to know that up front. These are the only 2 that I can find in my bookmarks, and they're NOT the best resources out there, but I'm sorry, I don't have time to look up more right now. These will give you an idea, but they don't address issues like shedding or correct activity levels in all cases. Please google for and try several Dog breed selectors and Dog traits lists. You
won't be sorry, and you won't be giving up your dog in 6 months.

Best of luck!

Well, first off, short haired dogs actually shed more that long haired dogs. Really depends on how small of a dog you want. Beagles are generally great with children. I do not recommend most terriers, especially a Jack Russell- they can be pretty aggressive, and are also extremely strong and muscular. In my experience, most terriers are more suitable for adults, not children. I also do not recommend a very small dog- children can unintentionally hurt them, as they are pretty fragile. Why not go to your local shelter? Interact with the available puppies and dogs- this is the best way to determine personality and also how much a dog is likely to bark. Not to mention you could give a home to dog that really needs one, and for a reasonable price.

personally i would rather have a larger breed to protect my child, rather than a dog i could punt. generally speaking small dogs are not a good idea if your child is young quite a few are rather temperamental go to the site i am putting up .it will list all the dogs and how they do with kids. if it was me though and the better half wasn't allergic i would have the wolf hybrid down the street or a german shepard.
let me say this i know you are freaking out about the wolf hybrid.i can personally say this dog is simply amazing, and friendly with ALL of the neighborhood kids, even my 3 year old. he can walk up to her and lay on top of her and she will just look at him then give him a kiss on the face. i also had 2 when i was younger.they are incredibly smart, protective, gentle and loyal.I guess from being a pack animal they see us as their alpha, and family. dint get me wrong you do need to train them(and the kids) to take care of each other properly, and know their place.
the only dog that dint bark is a basenji but it still makes noises.

maximum of those canines that all human beings is posting at the instant are not sturdy canines for little ones... fairly the guy who mentioned Pomeranian.. I actually have a Pom and he or she is far to tender to have little ones.. he legs are literally the size of your pinky finger, and can smash very extremely.. and young ones are a lot too tough to have a small canines. A med sized canines would be much better for you. My cousins have a Lhaso Apso, and it extremely is a superb med sized canines. And the canines is great with different animals, and each and all of the youngsters (3 of them).. a while 8, 11, and 17. i'd look into get a Lhaso Apso... A small canines is merely far to tender to have in case you have little ones... fairly a 2 twelve months previous.

beagle, cocker spaniel, rat terriers...it all just depends on the dog. Some beagles have bad barking problems, others dont say a word. Do a little research and get to know the dog before you adopt.

Ummmm well all dogs bark... Scottish terriers are cool. Jack Russels are nice. But noramlly a bigger dog is better with children like a golden retriver or a collie.

A BEAGLE, is the best for children.! To stop the barking, get a water bottle.
3/4 water to 1/4 vinager. When the barking starts say...his name...no..squirt the bottle towards his mouth. Each time he barks, replay. It will teach him not to bark .

The breed doesn't depend on how much the dog barks - it all matters on the dog's attitude.
